Mostly about C programming, but many of the comments apply equally well when you're writing a library in a higher-level language or a web API. Still, I'm glad not to have to worry about malloc fails, pointer craziness and array overflows an

Great post, but there were a few typos (e.g., under George Bell, "thousand time that" -> "thousand times that") and the use of "I" was very confusing -- was that Jason, or the speaker? One example is under Alexis' section, there was the

HN is no longer just Startup News, as it used to be. Topics which are of intellectual merit appeal both to startup founders as well as to PhD students. Hence the large number of PhD HNers and generally rosy picture of PhDs. But I agree with

I think the OPs comment was about computer science in particular, but even there things are changing somewhat. Partially it's because of the weak economy and scarcity of faculty jobs, but getting into the top-tier places almost requires a

I don't know if this is so specific to India. In a lot of the US (maybe even most of it?) you get called a traitor or unAmerican or whatever for not agreeing with the government or the Republicans or whoever is in power and control of the m

I wouldn't really call it trolling. There's no intention of malice, he doesn't feign seriousness when making a controversial point, he is very self-deprecating, and everything is said interspersed with jokes (that of course are sometimes hi

Not to get sucked into a debate about TDD stuff, but to me the following blog post said all that needs to be about at least the TDD business and "gurus" (if not the whole methodology): http://ravimohan.blogspot.com/2007/04/learning-from-su

Yeah this is completely backwards to me -- do you want the illusion of progress? Or progress? Often they are mutually incompatible.

I think jerf means that for the vast majority of PhD students, the most motivation you're going to have is at the beginning. It only gets worse from there. So if you have serious doubts before diving in, you're almost certainly going to hav

I think you might have it a little bit backwards. You need a fair amount of focus and self-motivation to complete a PhD. If you already are having issues with this, starting a PhD would be like giving a crack addict access to a large, cheap
