One thing I'm curious about is what it's like for a hacker to become an angel investor. I get the impression that being a VC is not that much fun (from a hacker's point of view), and in many respects being an Angel seems closer to a VC than

Newsnight is very far from unbiased journalism. I agree that we need better reporters, but the way to do it is not to keep pretending that they objectivity, but for their biases to be out in the open. It's like bugs in software: rather than

I know it's not really the same situation, but this reminds me of couples who have a child to help protect/save their marriage. This usually hurts, rather than helps the marriage.

Haha thanks for giving me the perfect setup to mention my own research. I've been working on automatically detecting visually describable attributes in face images. These include everything from coarse attributes such as gender, age, and

To clarify/be pedantic, what facebook just added was face detection -- detecting where the faces are in an image. Face recognition usually refers to figuring out who a given face is of. Riya was one of the first sites doing detection

Except this is exactly what was said about the iPhone when it came out -- that it was amazingly designed. If good design is supposed to be timeless, how can once-beautiful pieces of design now be considered as "rounded blob[s] of plastic" t

Is "Hand-to-Mouth" a well-known idiom in America and Europe? In India, it means an existence in which you are constantly worried about getting enough food to survive for another day, and all the money you get from working ("hand") goes dire

I see that you are looking for something quite different from what I expected -- you are thinking more along management lines than technical ones ("Program/Project Managers at Google/Facebook"). You're right that a PhD is probably not for y

OK, let me try to answer/comment on what you said. Excuse me if some of these sound blunt. 1. Your age is irrelevant. 2. Working at a management consulting company as an analyst is almost the definition of enterprise fizz-buzz programming.

I'm always amazed every time I read or watch interviews or talks by Catmull for his incisiveness. It's so rare to find someone who's both technically and organizationally brilliant, with a track record as phenomenal as he has had at Pixar.

The fact that I instantly recognized this problem case (having had it many times myself) makes me sad. I'm so incredibly happy that 95% of the code I write now is in Python.

PCA is optimal from an L2 perspective, but with images, that is often not the metric you want to use. Of course I was a little bit confused by the fact that he's talking about lossless compression but then mentioning jpeg, which is lossy. I

I'd wager that if you added up salaries forgone by ycombinator participants and compared them against aggregate payout it would paint a fairly bleak economic picture. I'd take that wager at a 100:1 payout in a heartbeat! My guess is that
