The computer vision aspects to the Kinect (and there are a lot, and very well done), were headed up by Andrew Blake at MS Research Cambridge, who's one of the foremost vision scientists in the world. http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/

Shouldn't text be judged on its own merits, rather than who the author is? And who is the author? I have no idea. But I do know from reading the article that he sounds bitter/jealous and a little bit clueless.

Off-topic, but why do so many blogs not have any indication whatsoever of the date posted? It's at least partially understandable for more "essay-like" posts which contain essentially timeless information, but particularly when your post us

Any chance of getting antirez for a Redis talk? I did see someone else on the future list talking about Redis at use in a company, but it's not quite the same thing.

There's a slideshow linked from the bottom of the 2nd page (bad placement, IMO). Here's a direct link: http://www.scientificamerican.com/slideshow.cfm?id=gigapixel...

This is a nice article about some recent work from my research lab. I'd be happy to (try to) answer any questions people have.

Not directly, but there was some work on animating speech in virtual avatars[1] (constructed from a single image of a face) which uses the cubes to make animated 3d avatars. What I found especially interesting is that even though the point-

Our research lab recently created a more involved version of this using fairly cheap materials that's much more expressive: http://www.cs.columbia.edu/CAVE/projects/3d_display/ (Don't miss the video at the bottom of the page.)
