It's funny you say that actually because I would fall into the category of being all about the web . I'm self taught and learned 100% in a web environment. I actually didn't have any experience with pure scripting (data-mining and processi

How about using parse.com's new javascript database layer to abstract the requisite server-side dependencies. (disclaimer, I've never used it myself). Then you'll be able to teach a user how to setup a simple one page web app, maybe a todo

thats the thing though...people that know how to program know that programming is not about typing words on a screen. patio11 brought up a good point in that in order to read one must learn the alphabet. I think this is very true but lets

I think this is a good idea but the more popular you get the more filtering you need. If 1000 hire-ees want to meet for coffee how will the hirer filter them? Well I guess I like the idea from the hire-ee perspective. But isn't it a bad dea

For multi-page applications the problem becomes how to load and manage dependencies on the client-side. I use http://requirejs.org/ for this.

I'd honestly want to help you enable this using http://ruhoh.com . it's jekyll inspired but made to be a lot more streamlined. The stack is markdown and mustache. This would be a great way for me to see how I need to evolve the ruhoh platf

My kneejerk reaction to this is that it's very hard for a programmer-type to write. Part of programming is of course discipline, attention to detail, conciseness, etc. The same things apply to writing but it comes across much much harder be

cool service, I hope it remains up so we can depend on it. Currently you can accomplish the same thing using Yahoo's YQL, if you'd rather trust a big company to stay up. Here's an example: http://y.ahoo.it/b7rnO I'm using it on my website

touché =) I understand that very clearly when you put it that way. I remember my dad beating the alphabet into my head. It was the only way that he could eventually teach me how to read. Thanks for that.

At the risk of sounding difficult, all work is derivative and I think that's a beautiful thing, not a thing meant to be haggled over and fussed about. But I do get the point of your second paragraph. Ideally students go to class for the s

Isn't the same true for using all frameworks then? Surely people don't think every Rails app was written from the ground up? FWIW I am indeed all lovey dovey about Open Source. I think all code should be "Open and Free". Of course I know th

No, I meant "he" as in the subject of your post - the filmaker. I find it a bit odd that you, I assume an adult, are saying things like "what he is doing isn't that spectacular" in regards to a nine year old boy. I don't get why you have so
