This is purely economic. Fear mongering gets clicks, which boosts ad revenues. I've read statistics to the effect that bad news (fear or rage bait) often gets as much as 10,000X the engagement vs good news.

Good news doesn't get clicks. Usually doesn't even get reported.

> Well designed security models don't sell computers/operating systems, apparently. That's because there's a tension between usability and security, and usability sells. It's possible to engineer security systems

We can power it all and then some with renewable and nuclear energy. We elected a regime openly hostile to that and openly pro fossil fuel. Like they literally ran on burning more coal, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that we are burning more

A number of existing P2P things already do this, though usually with UDP.

I really wish Reddit would turn on a feature to show where the account came from. Of course the troll farms would just use VPNs. Man if Russia went dark like half of all politics X and Reddit would probably go dark. I bet it would be both

What happens if you ask it to undress Elon Musk? Not saying someone with a Xhitter account to burn should do this, but not not saying they should do it.

Radical idea many won't like, but if I were CEO of Dell I'd consider it: buy Framework. Then don't ruin it. Put real resources behind it. Think of it as almost a reverse merger, not financially but spiritually. It would make

I don’t think these hypotheses are mutually exclusive. Low metallicity in the past might explain how we could be first even though the galaxy is very old. The conditions did not exist until recently, on cosmic time scales. If the probabilit

Post Trump will happen. Post AI won’t. It’s here to stay, though the investment bubble will fade. RAM prices will come down as price signals work and supply ramps. There’s now more demand for RAM.

This is another thing that feeds into the Fermi paradox. Previous generations of stars and planets might be too low metallicity to give rise to very complex intelligent life. We might be part of the first crop to evolve as the metallicity o

That means you have to work on the original code, and modern entry-mid level devs can't do that. It's probably in C++. Your expensive senior and staff level devs are on more important projects. Make it a web app and your cheap ent

The reason for this is that it's hard to hire native UI developers, but easy to hire web devs. Something like 90% of all new devs today learn only cloud-native backend dev or web frontend dev. The only exceptions tends to be mobile and

I think there are other forces at work, but I have to admit that a ton of what's happening right now looks like the hangover from a large scale economic distortion. ZIRP was also, along with under-building, a major force in pumping h

This will shock people, but America is not all that racist by world standards. Talk to someone from Asia for starters. I’m not aware of anywhere with no racism. Humans are tribal and broad stereotypes are intellectually lazy but easy.

It's the largest reason by a gigantic margin. Economies of scale are exponential in manufacturing. Things get exponentially cheaper as you make more of them. CRTs got cheap too (relatively speaking), but the scale was smaller back then

I think this is at least better than the old food pyramid, though not perfect. It's a step in the right direction. What I hate, and react against, is the package deal. We get a better food pyramid, but we also get antivax imbeciles and

I still think those are less "hard" and non-negotiable than API and architecture lock-in in computing. The physical world in general is more analog, more open to gradual and "soft" change. Digital things work or do not w

A major difference is: there is an economic incentive to not leak methane since a leak is wasted fuel, while the economic incentive for CO2 is to make more of it.

Fuel is a huge component of the cost of operating an airline, sometimes the largest component. LNG is a much cheaper fuel, so I can see it being adopted for mainstream aviation eventually. Existing jets could technically be converted, thoug

"If it bleeds it leads" has been known since near the dawn of published media. Humans have a powerful negativity and bad-news bias. It's probably a left over adaptation. "If you mistake a bush for a lion, you're fin

That’s another reason current designs are probably locked in. It’s called being stuck at a local maximum. I’m not saying what we have is bad, just that the benefit of hindsight reveals some things. Computing is tougher than other areas of e
