Careful... you're on the verge here of realizing that intelligence is not a single-dimensional thing and that 'g' is bullshit.

Yeah, this stuff always comes with "your mileage may vary." What I remember is a lot of very optimistic ideas being discussed openly without a lot of cynicism or irony. Go find some old Mondo 2000 or other early-mid 90s futurist m

It's definitely not possible to be scientific with this stuff, but I really don't agree. While the 90s were definitely not utopia, the dark edgy stuff was surface and there was a great deal of optimism underneath. Today I would sa

If it avoids context switches and memory copying, or even reduces them, it could be a big win for high throughput networking stuff.

I think it started the collapse of that narrative. The failure of the Arab Spring and the rise of Xi Jinpeng did the rest.

The thing is nothing much actually changed, at least not physically. We lost a few thousand people and some buildings. More people die every year of the flu. Covid has killed over 50X 9/11 and yet 9/11 felt like a much more profou

I am so nostalgic for the 1990s. I am a young Xer, almost an old millennial, kind of on the cusp. I've wondered if this is a cognitive artifact of my age in the 90s, teens to 20, but I have asked older and even a few younger people and

Yes, and it's sort of apples and oranges for that reason. What it does show is that lots of cores may be much better for this type of work load.

That requires infrastructure changes, which is pretty much impossible as nobody has a vested interest and its herding cats. P2P means over existing networks. I forgot to write though: I am not convinced this is that big a problem in the rea

This is driven by the shift toward valuing companies entirely on recurrent revenue. I've been told that non-recurrent revenue is meaningless and is often ignored. Its just the latest business fad.

Which features is Nomad missing? Feature count comparisons are meaningless unless the features are tied to actual important use cases. Lots of software is encrusted with rarely used features that just add complexity.

That's such a flaw in the Internet's architecture. IP was never designed for such a hostile environment.

Naive P2P doesn't scale like that. You'd have to do something much more advanced like a tree based multicast algorithm. That's hard to get right. Seems like the engineering there is more expensive than just paying for a ton o

Yes and no. Like many other things, there's probably a power law distribution in terms of the cost of reaching certain levels of military capability. It might cost 10% as much as our budget to get to 75% of the capability, and 80% of o

You're probably right, but this doesn't solve the fundamental problem. People who do intellectual labor, such as writing books, must be paid because everyone must be paid. Nothing is free. There are two options: (1) Copyright law,
