What the what? Averages over kinetic energies are summations. Adding them is well-defined and has a straightforward interpretation as the average energy per particle. Formally, temperature is defined as T = 1/(\partial(S)/\partial(E)) with

I'm not sure I understand your sentence (did you mean language x does implement dynamic scope?), but I feel obliged to mention Perl offers lexical scoping as well--within each file and each block.

Sadly, Verizon insists that a task killer is essential to maintain free memory. I've tried to convince them otherwise--watching the ADB logs should be sufficient to conclude that the memory manager is doing its job just fine--but no luck. I

The point of the article is that on Android, you don't need to know what a task killer is either, since it's not necessary.

This gets even more fun in languages which allow unicode names. Did you know there are dozens of identical-looking ways to spell "true"?

I saw that and flipped out. It also requires an extra two scans through the list, in addition to the memory overhead for the temporary structures. Happily, the merge-with suggestion is much more efficient.

I really want to get into Clojure, but everything I've read suggests that I'll have to learn Emacs to do it. Does anyone think giving up Vim for a few months is worth it?

Are any antibodies entirely genetically determined--"off the rack", so to speak? One would think that having an innate immune response to extraordinarily dangerous yet infrequently-mutating pathogens (polio, for example) would be worthwhi

I Am Not An Immunologist, but antibodies are usually produced by plasma cells, after their predecessor B cells are triggered with the appropriate antigens, right? I'm pretty sure that mechanism and its memory is acquired, not innate. In oth

An unlisted landline number with Verizon returned full name, carrier, and cost center location within 10 miles. A Sprint cell number gave correct name, carrier, and city as well. Trying a Google Voice number, though, gives only an unrelated

Am I the only person who saw the line about the parking lot being half empty at 8 and 5 and thought, "Oh, that's consistent with a normal distribution of people working 10 hour days with a couple hour variance in arrival times"?

The hunt for the Higg's Boson, and the "failure" to find it after all these years just seems like a reminder that empirical evidence > theoretical models. Just because the math seems elegant doesn't mean it necessarily applies to the u
