whoa - it'll be cheaper for me to fly to Moscow (from DC) and travel to Eastern Europe by rail than actually flying directly in -- by about $420. This is dead useful; thanks for the link!

my culture is the same - it doesn't make sense to throw out an 18 year old (child, really), out on their own. I'd have lived with my mom had I not attended college on the other side of the country.

weekly planner. Any will do, really — seeing events/responsibilities on paper laid out for the whole week helps me clear my thoughts and organize my time.

I don't think first-years are a fair assessment of any institution. Many of the original 90% partiers will either a) shape up, b) drop out of college or c) some other choice. Good luck -- my friend is also a grad student teaching first-year

that's been the most difficult part for me, actually -- finding fun problems that I could work on that aren't completely impossible. I spent a lot of time reading books on Python when I should have just been playing with code.

for some reason I didn't find this funny ... it's oddly reminiscent of "Punk'd", where Ashton Kutcher places people in awful situations and then pulls the blanket and laughs at how upset they got.
