I’m curious whether you think that civil society, by your definition, still exists in the US today.

Ironically that was almost certainly false, i.e. wildfire smoke is not healthy. With the smoke from Canadian wildfires in the northeastern US, the advice on the worst days has been to stay indoors. Here’s an announcement from the New Jersey

If they don’t know, showing up and telling them will let them know. If you excuse the effects that people’s actions have because they didn’t realize they were causing them, you guarantee that those effects will never stop.

“Virtue signaling” is a term narcissists and psychopaths use when they encounter criticism they don’t like. I’m commenting because the post title was obnoxious and deserved to be called out. “Virtue signaling” has nothing to do with it. Whe

As soon as anyone starts talking about alignment, my question is why we don’t seem to be paying nearly as much attention to alignment when it comes to CEOs, billionaires, and national politicians. The answer is of course that those people a

Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the common passive-agressive use of "you're welcome" in exactly the kind of context the OP article uses it. But it's a thing, even if you haven't come across it.

No, fuzzy logic doesn't change what I said at all. In terms of intelligence, both of those technologies were at best limited and simplistic attempts at achieving what LLMs have actually achieved. Comparing the two in 2026 seems like a

In the web dev world, I’ve noticed there are a lot of people who think that JSON is the ultimate modern data format. Typically those same people have barely heard of JSON Schema.

Protobuf was never particularly a Java thing. You could more accurately say it was a C++ thing. It was initially developed in C++, and used mainly in C++ services at Google. The implementation and early ecosystem were C++-centric. Later, Go

Thanks - I'd have to have noticed that I used an unescaped asterisk first... too late now. Did you mean hub gears or hub motors? The Copenhagen had an ungeared hub motor. Comparing it to other hub motors, theirs was only IPX4-rated, wh

We don’t have the ability to do that level of analysis of natural language text mathematically. If we did, we probably wouldn’t need LLMs in the first place, i.e. we could just generate text using explicitly programmed algorithms.

Valid point, it’s why I included the word “traditional”, to try to qualify that. What I meant is something more like explicitly programmed vs. learned. Intelligence can result from learned behavior, but not from explicit programming of rule
