I think lumping together all European countries like that is not really helpful: not many european countries have a median income one third of the american one, and some are even higher than the US one. wrt duration of maternity leave, west

PagerDuty does not solve some of the problems you would have at FB's scale, like how do you even know who to contact ? And how do they login once they know there is a problem ?

The rail network appears to be only 20% larger in Austria than Switzerland (5000 vs 6000 km Google tells me). Then the salaries of the people operating those transports are also higher in Switzerland. The GA is a pretty good deal already.

I personally find myself reaching more and more often to SQLite as an in-between. I like having access to basic SQL and not needing to care about filesystem details for reliability is nice. And it is part of Python standard library so I nee

I tried doing some math on this, since you got me thinking! Let's assume the "lock force" is 100N, and the surface of the fridge's door is 1 square meter. This means the pressure differential between inside and outside w

I think it is simply that cooling a gas will reduce its pressure if you maintain constant volume (Ideal gas law). So when you open the door you warmup the air inside, and when it cools down once to door is locked, the pressure is lower, loc

How does this work with virtualized machines? Do you pay per underlying core, but if yes, how do you know how many physical cores you are using ?

Honest question: could it be argued that HN does not store any PII and therefore does not need to let you delete your account ?

I think it might be more of an headache: what if somebody fixes a bug in an analyzer so that it catches things it used to miss ? Should it be a breaking change ? Personally i would vote for "Wall with Werror" means no guarantee fo

auto_ptr (precursor to unique_ptr) was first proposed for standardisation in 1994 [0], and there was probably non standard versions of it before 94. http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/

My guess for "how to make sure all people are out": typically in such industrial, high security facilities, each people going in would have to badge at each door, i.e. no holding the door for a group of people. Combined with many

I think what's interesting is that having access to a good development platform (the M1 mac) might enable projects like Docker, Node or Linux to get up to speed on ARM earlier. The dev experience is really much better on a local machin

A good reason is that if you want interop with other languages, C is still the lingua franca of ABIs. All scripting languages have a way to interact with C through some form of FFI mechanism. I guess you could write it in Rust and maintain

Usually you don't run an operating system on those, or maybe what is called a Realtime Operating System (RTOS). That's basically glorified thread scheduler, with some basic synchronization primitives. Regarding the Linux question,

I think in this context that's not a real concern, as on most laptop the human user has root equivalent permissions anyway (via sudo). In addition, Docker supports user namespaces, allowing you to have root in container being mapped to

Serious question: Why do you believe that to be insane? The Dockerfile for a simple application such as black must be very short (probably 3-4 lines), the alias is probably quite short and the container overhead time is minimal for native d

Even if you have only 1 machine, you could deploy a reverse proxy in front of it (think nginx, haproxy and co). Then you can start your application on two different endpoints, and instruct your load balancer to go from one to the other. Ngi
