I thought Hawkins's book "On Intelligence" was amazing. It's a bit wild how close things have followed to the direction he laid out.

Scala is the perfect example of why you want to limit expressivity. It's seems so cool and awesome at first, but then you have to support a code base with other engineers and you quickly come to the view that go's limited express

This feels like the opposite direction of where we should be going. Open source should be more like science where you will never get paid unless some company or lab is paying you to do it, and there is a hard focus against commercializatio

I get the point here but for many organizations and types of companies this is a terrible and unworkable idea. A lot of companies have to wait till weekend for maintenance (e.g. trading/market making apps), and so your only options a

I don't really disagree with what you say, but I mostly play on laptops and I find that a MacbookPro M3 max feels about the same as my Razer gaming laptop with a 4090 in it. It's the same silicon on laptop and desktop with apple g

You can run AAA games on any apple silicon, and the perf is usually superior to anything else on the market except specialized gaming PCs. The real issue is that there is a small selection compared to xbox/ps/pc.

This ^. approach and modified forms of it can bu used to track lots of things, and have be done so for decades by some goverment agencies. You can use a method like this even if people are using encryption and lot of anonymous tunnels. You

I mostly remember them going out of business like Iridium did in 1999. Clearly the market wasn't there as no one I knew used satellite services for anything other than TV, and that model failed against broadband. Starlink is first ti

Something about that doesn't seem right. What about Apple or literally any of the other mega corps that have passed or closed to approach the 1T market cap?

Your point is good, but that stack wouldn't win any latency awards. Many of the people I know using kafka need latencies in the millisecond range.

Yes, I'm aware, but if none of those companies existed linux would still be doing great. Same way that if we made it so you couldn't charge for fonts the entire ecosystem would still be doing great. We don't need the rent se

That is like asking how could linux exist. Use your brain and imagine. We would likely have many more great fonts than we do today if you outlawed charging for them because people would no long have a protectionist mindset. It would be e

If we made it illegal to charge money for, we would have just as many good fonts as we do now. We should just change the law to outlaw making money this way.

The best answer to this is look at the VS Code ecosystem (as Intellij is niche by a small number of developers). In that ecosystem you will have all kinds of plugins from things watching and notifiying you about pipeline status to things
