The argument against electric cars that bothers me the most is this "Try driving across the country with it." Try driving an internal combustion engine car across the country without an infrastructure to support it. See how far you get. Hel

Joakal, after reading a bunch of comments on this thread it seems like you have a great group of people with whom to start your own online meetup. You could organize it to be in a private IRC at a certain date and moderate the discussion. I

I was hesitant to switch to AT&T when I bought an iPhone 4, but I have to say I haven't had any problems with them. In Chicago I have had more problems with Comcast than I've had with AT&T. I'll be sticking around.

Apple and 37Signals don't show products until they're ready. That works for them. Sahil of letscrate.com committed publicly to an iPhone app before even having an idea of what to make. That worked well for him. The talking heads in this ind

There was an episode of This Week in Startups with DHH as a guest where a Shark Tank caller pitched his web-based IDE. I was surprised to see both Calacanis and Hansson shit all over the idea. For the reasons you mention, it's a great idea.

I'm actually working on my first web app where you can tally and split costs among roommates and then either email or tweet them a link to a bill showing what they owe you. There won't be any payment engines because I figure you'll either g

Max, I pretty much disagree with everything you said. 1) If he keeps his high paying job he won't have the motivation to work on his startup. That's more likely to lead to failure than jumping in with both feet. 2) Why does he have >90%

In that case, go for it! You have nothing to lose. You'll always be a doctor, but you may never get this opportunity again (low expenses, no kids). If you spend all your time working on Plan B, you'll never get to Plan A.

I heard a great quote from someone once that said "I don't care how much you make, tell me how much you saved". That's really the key question here. If I made 300k/yr I'd probably have 270k in the bank after a year(neglecting taxes) because

Jump right in. If you take a CS class they'll have you coding right away. Since you're doing this on your own you won't have that external force to keep you moving. What will end up happening is you'll constantly read more and more, but nev

We don't use one yet so I may be getting ahead of myself, but it'll help get a proof of concept made in days instead of months. The iterative process of drawing something up in CAD, sending to a manufacturer, and testing the prototype is

3D printers are going to do for physical products what frameworks did for web apps. Personally, I'm super excited because it's going to chop my product development time into pieces.

This is a good point, but the OP brings up a valid question that can be applied to businesses in general. The smallest companies stand to lose the most for exposing their idea, yet companies from 37Signals to Apple are very secretive about

Take note when that happens and let that be your guide to telling you what you should be working on. We all have things we think we should be working on, but they often get kicked to the curb when something else comes along. The more you

For a while I used the freely available HTML book at Railstutorial.org, but I recently bought the screencast + pdf bundle. The quality of the material is top notch. Paying for stuff will make you feel guilty if you don't use it. As a bonus,

People choose to look at the relative value of money instead of its absolute value. 20 million for Google is nothing - true. However, 20 million as a US currency is huge and can benefit many, many lives. My question for HN is which way do y

It really depends on the manufacturer. Some don't want to deal with you unless you're in the 100s of thousands. We were very lucky to find a company that will make a quantity as low as 300, but there would be no reasonable price we could ch
