Well, just from skimming some of the pages on Amazon, it seems to back up a lot of the original article's points. eg. on p25 McConnell lists project outcomes by project size: 1000 LOC -> 81% on time, 4% late, 2% cancelled 10,000

Well, sure - every team starts with 10 people or so, but in pathological organisations you'll get a lot more people who need to give status reports, particularly around crunch time...

Now you have 50 status emails and 100 responses to those emails (and 50 responses to those responses...) that you MUST!!1! read and digest each day. Plus other people have already made (bad) decisions and started working on stuff that (nega

The other thing that a lot of people forget is that a stand up is supposed to be informal. If you're leaving a paper trail that management can go back through (even in theory), then it will get sanitised, and people will try and make themse

No it's not. Because frequently, the things which are blocking you could be easily fixed by them changing something simple in their workflow, and vice versa. Even just a heads up that something important is coming down the line can save you

It's not a strawman, it's called argumentum ad absurdum . If we take his premise as true: > If some one is good, they will win anyway. If they are not, they can't and won't. The conclusion from that is that the lack of women in tech

You dance around it, but that's what you're saying. What else would explain the < 5% female speaker rate at conferences? Obviously the good women are making it, and the rest... just aren't very good. "Reservations" or whatever you want

Let's try a different tack. Say that you put out a call for conference papers, but due to a bug in your mailing list software, only every other email is sent - 50% of potential participants are excluded. What do you think will happen to the

I'll ignore the first line, since I'm parsing that as trolling, but the second line bears some thought. The basic answer to that is that they're not - if you know someone who stutters, I would like to think that you'd encourage them to pres

Well I don't exist to facilitate your preferred status quo. That's the context of the article - some speakers are exercising their right not to participate on panels or give talks unless the conference makes more than a lip service effo

In general that'll just make you miserable. If it's that bad, either start actively looking (eg. interviews at lunch time), or quit and fall back on your 3-6 months of savings runway while you look.

Well, in the places where I've seen it done right, the code reviews happen before the code is committed. Fixing existing code after it's already in the code base is a losing battle (particularly since it usually has to be re-tested), and

Professional programmers do things in certain ways because it's more efficient. It doesn't necessarily follow that you should change that just because someone is just starting out. Just because they're learning to code, doesn't mean that yo

You could say the same thing about $10 - the value of a $10 note to (eg.) a millionaire is a lot less than it is to most people. If the employee is hungry, then they'll value lunch more. For accounting purposes though, it's $10.

I think "savings" is probably the wrong word - "profit" might be better. If I have a car to drive to work, then I should be able to claim some proportion of it as a deduction. Currently that's not allowed (at least in Australia, where I'm f

I don't know about that, but you do need to at least interact with the code on some level, eg. by cut+pasting, then playing around with the code to make it do different things. Also, I don't know many professional programmers who type every
