I hadn’t been following their plumbing saga but seems pretty rough. EDIT: I had pasted a link but it seems that the author redirects HN traffic to something other than the intended content. The one I linked was the most recent post on DNA L

(disclaimer: I work on Fuchsia, not speaking on behalf of my employer, feel free to clone the source repo and make your own analysis) FWIW, to the best of my memory as of a year ago I counted ~1.1 MLoC of Rust code in our open source tree,

This was basically the approach of Mozilla Research AIUI, which gave us Rust. IIRC this talk goes into a lot of history there: https://youtu.be/9OHcJzJQ2Nk .

I love the quote, but I'll offer another perspective. I had a pretty significant physical transformation over the last few years. It's the result of work I did and I feel very proud of what I've built. But! I did it after sta

I agree with this perspective and it’s part of the reason I’ve been considering moving into the city — it seems like a tech diaspora could relieve many of the pressures on SF in the coming years that would allow it to grow back in the direc

What about biological or habitual adaptation, maybe call it acclimation? People in different climates will have different ways of maintaining homeostasis relative to the weather and technological adaptations they have available for it. If y

It's very difficult to improve oneself without understanding the mechanisms, context, and history that contribute to one's behavior.

Having grown up in an environment exactly like your edit describes, I really appreciate you voicing this perspective.

It looks like this bootstrap chain script goes through each stable version in turn, although it hasn’t been updated to latest mrustc: https://android.googlesource.com/platform/prebuilts/rust/+/r... .

Parents recognize their own gender/sex in the baby, and babies can easily pattern off of differing levels of attention or different kinds of moment-to-moment emotional feedback.

This is very fair, and I could have phrased with more nuance. Upon reflection I'm actually not sure how I could be convinced that you'd raised a child without gender influence.

Aggression can absolutely be patterned by parents.

This makes some sense, but your analysis assumes that observed parental gender roles aren’t responsible for the patterning you describe before 1yr. I’d be more convinced of an analysis of child rearing in a “gender neutral environment” crea

Based on my time in a university department you might want to cc whoever chairs the IRB or at least oversees its decisions for the CS department. Seems like multiple incentives and controls failed here, good on you for applying the leverage

I think Javascript has many user who think they benefit from competing implementations. I’m not sure the sentiment there seems as strong as in the C++ community, but it definitely exists.

I don’t agree with this analysis TBH - async drop has been revisited multiple times recently with no luck. Without a clear path there I don’t know why that would seem like an option for async/await two years ago. Do you actually think

“Rust would have been a better language by breaking its stability guarantees” is just saying “Rust would have been a better language by not being Rust.” Maybe true, but not relevant to the people whose work you’ve blanket criticized. Rust l

I'm not suggesting that Zig isn't concerned with safety, but it's not a language designed first and foremost to offer certain safety properties. For Rust you can say "as long as you don't write the `unsafe` keyword

FWIW, use of memory-safe languages doesn't preclude exploitability. It's "just" another way to reduce attack surface. (disclosure: i work on fuchsia, big rust fanboy)
