What is your definition of “a user”? Is it a daily/weekly/monthly active account, or based on activated device?

It’s easier to fight fraud when you own the entire stack from the hardware, the OS, the App Store, and the SDKs.

Et tu, Apple? Although I predict that in true Apple style, they’ll somehow manage to make ads fashionable in 3-5 years.

You might be underestimating normalization of deviance in society. Meta’s already demonstrated that the younger generation will adopt VR headsets for gaming. “Dorkiness” is very unlikely to be a sufficient barrier here.

Good thing both are non-issues if you’re sitting in an office chair and using AR video passthrough mode.

Exactly. The cost of my WFH monitor setup alone was more than what Meta’s asking for the Pro.

You’ll be happy to learn that people are actively thinking about and working on accessibility for AR/VR. And if it’s something you feel strongly about, there’s companies and teams that are hiring specifically for this role.

What tech and/or societal changes would be needed to reach a world where a fair amount of user generated content is spatial (as opposed to 2D)?

Isn’t that just the definition of network effect? Meta is clearly betting that at a certain critical mass not owning a VR headset in a professional environment will be like not owning a webcam.

Surprise: you can already do this in Meta’s Workrooms. Opening a private interactive window to your computer while in a VR meeting works as expected, although it’s just as obvious as when you do it in a video call…

Unironically, the worst nightmare I had recently was that Kagi went bankrupt. I can’t imagine going back to a search engine that treats its users as poorly as Google.

I’ve had lackluster results with hosting weekly office hours. A grand total of 2 engineers showed up, both on my direct team, out of 100+ ICs in my org over the course of 2 months. But your mileage will vary depending on workplace culture I

You mean the retention rate for each learning method? Those are mutually exclusive… I guess this is a good example of OP’s claim that reading is only 10% effective.

Most scooters are decently heavy, maybe 40-50 lbs. Carrying one some distance to a river while it beeps at you probably takes enough effort to deter casual hooligans.

I would shoot a warning shot into the air. But maybe at that distance it wouldn’t be clear enough and that’d just escalate the situation..

Other search engines allow you to block domains from showing up in the results. I’ve switched to Kagi out of frustration and honestly it’s as good or better than Google just because of that one feature.

Summer interns using “ex-Company” is a clever hack but so infuriating to me. It’s like vacationing in France for 3 months and calling yourself French. There’s a special place for people who use it to be misleading when advertising their pro

Bug report templates work wonders. Ours is just some checkboxes and a few lines for OS version, package manager, etc. but it’s been effective at filtering out low effort reports.

So I dry ran it against a tiny open source repo I maintain and it worked on exactly 0 of the last 50 PRs. For example, it didn’t auto-approve a PR that was just deleting stale documentation files... The idea sounds nice, but the execution i

Sorry, but have you actually compared the two? As another point of anecdata, I immediately noticed that my new coworker was using a proper camera during our first 1:1. The depth of field and crispness really stands out from your typical Mac

The goodwill of your testers is likely worth far more than the marginal revenue you’d gain from having them pay full price. I was in a similar position many years back and learned the hard way that people _absolutely loathe_ when you take t

It would be useful to include what headset you tried in your comment. Consumer VR has progressed a lot in the last few years wrt resolution, refresh rate, and form factor.

Uber and Lyft have car rental options, although the experience between the two differs quite a bit, having used both in the past few months. Uber car rentals is just a proxy for traditional car rental services like Hertz. All the aforementi

Your project is fascinating, but 8000 queries/hr is just over 2 queries/sec. Even bursting up to 10x that (20 QPS), it doesn’t seem surprising that it can run on consumer hardware? Am I missing something?

Genuine question as I haven’t been following COVID news closely. What’s the hospitalization rate and long term effects from Omicron COVID? Do we have sufficient data to suggest that it’s milder than Delta etc?
