His “defense” for using the API inefficiently is that the official app makes a similar amount requests as Apollo, ignoring whether those are actually API requests or just telemetry (as mentioned in the linked video). Apollo makes 3.5x more

Do any other large social media companies allow third party clients in the same unfettered capacity that people seem to be expecting from Reddit?

Caching requests for feeds and comments would probably work. Reddit already does this at the server level with a low TTL. Benchmarking Apollo against the official app is not that useful since we don’t know for certain what APIs they use.

Third party app users make up a tiny fraction of all Redditors, even assuming they’re more predisposed to posting or commenting.

The devs could spend more time optimizing their apps to make fewer requests rather than coordinating a strike and running to the press.

You can try Quest headsets at retail stores like Best Buy.

I buy/sell physical goods on several large subreddits and I’ve found that chats are the fastest way to get a response and close a deal. The old private message system is clunky by comparison.

Very interested about this too. It’s missing important features from the official app like chats and live threads.

Good luck releasing a client like that on the App Store.

Yes. Apollo has 1.5M users according to Christian, so you’re looking at a nominal cost of $4/yr/user. Keep in mind that 3.5x is just the lower bound; until now, Reddit apps haven’t really needed to be cognizant about how often the

> ultra-shitty interface that nobody wants to use I don’t want to sound dramatic, but the official Reddit app works just fine and is much more popular than any third party client in terms of usage.

Source? It’s plausible that most third party client users are power users, but certainly not the other way around.

You can cache subreddit feeds and comment threads which are the two most common API requests.

A Reddit engineer commented that Apollo uses 3x more API requests per user compared to other Reddit clients. There’s definitely room for optimization and I find Christian’s attitude off putting that his users just naturally “use more” API c

I think both your premise and conclusion is wrong. You make it sound like VR motion sickness is the norm, but it’s really not. Tons of people play VR games every day with smooth locomotion, on “potato VM” game engines, at 72 or 90 Hz withou

Looks like it was just posted today. I appreciate his candidness but disagree with how he’s trying to spin it. Basically: - He negotiated a revenue split with the source so he could publish the information publicly. - He claims he didn’t kn

Worth calling out that Bradley has insider info partially because he bribes engineers at VR companies to leak stuff like full CAD models of unreleased headsets.

Biking 10-15 minutes to work on a protected bike path is an order of magnitude better experience mentally and physically, speaking from personal experience.

Yes the value to cost isn’t there if you’re not very invested in XR. But I wouldn’t discount the local display dimming, eye tracking (for foveated rendering), faster GPU / CPU clocking, and 10% PPD increase which all contribute to bett

And this assumes that selling displays is a highly profitable enterprise, right? Or what would motivate tech companies to invest in such an architecture, especially one with a “standardized open ecosystem”?

What are some examples of VR headsets with better inside-out tracking or hand tracking than the Quest 2? On the software side, is there a comparable standalone game library to the Quest Store and App Lab?

I find the Quest Pro lenses and screen to be a significant improvement over Quest 2 in terms of clarity. You’ll find many other people saying the same thing. So your 5-year timeline seems off to me.

Replacing another entertainment source is definitely a clear sign of value, no argument there. But I think you’ll find that your priors are quite a bit off at least in terms of “heavy usage” of VR though. Without any snark, I highly suggest

Serious question: If someone is smart and capable enough to work on tangible things like AI systems or self-driving cars, why should they choose the NYSE outside of pure monetary reasons or affinity for a “modern” tech stack?

All of the examples you gave are either real words or composites of real words, making them 10-100x more memorable and brandable than “Kdenlive.” I agree that expectations should be different for FOSS, but the bar is literally at “pick one

I look forward to the blog post in 2 years where Standard Notes realizes that reinventing Cordova was not in fact the right solution to building a high quality, cross platform app!
