I was under the impression that weather balloons fly well above the max altitude of commercial airliners (60k ft). It seems significant that the last 3 “objects” have been encountered at typical airliner altitudes (40k ft or under)

The WW2 Japanese balloon bombs were later (1944-1945). Some were shot down.

If you send 100,000 bomb-balloons at your nuclear-triad-possessing enemy you have telegraphed the world’s worst sneak attack. You’d better get it over with and try your first strike after launching your balloons because your enemy will prob

That was Britain vs France. Are you thinking of the War of 1812? Britain vs USA.

Sending 100,000 armed balloons towards a nuclear-armed adversary doesn’t sound like 10d chess strategic thinking.

Philosophically, it matters whether LLMs understand something or merely act like they do. Practically, it doesn’t matter.

Many/most of these companies have a huge portfolio of projects underway and have lots of open headcount that they’re hiring for. What sense does it make to say cut an engineer from one org only to hire another one a month later for ano

Lmfao. Do you know how hiring works at a large company? When your management chain has won a few headcount marbles during this quarter’s game of Hungry Hungry Hippos, it’s not in your interest to blithely challenge them on it.

The medical licensing body is making the market in surgeons. Their interest is in keeping wages high and supply low. In fact, “making the market” is not even the right analogy - the licensing body is the sole supplier of surgeons. Nobody is

Supply impacts wages. More people want to be game devs per open position than want to be non-game devs per open position.

Layoffs are life changing. Not everyone who is laid off is an in-demand engineer. “Tech jobs” obscure the fact that most roles are non- or light-technical jobs that are common at many companies (HR, sales, support, etc).

There is no way that 60% are engineers. This kind of scale up is usually in sales and customer support roles, and moderation if applicable.

Traditional guilds fostered apprenticeship, mentorship and relationships between practitioners that transcend firms/projects. Given that “the market” seems to have settled on LC as the only measure of skill I don’t think it’s far fetch

None of the large tech companies conducting layoffs have had their back against the wall. They are mostly just purging after their irrational pandemic hiring as well as doing galaxy-brained copycat layoffs. Isn’t it remarkable that “economi

Yeah, it’s unfortunate that it hasn’t come to market. Ford has the eco boost 3.5L engine in the Transit but not its Powerboost hybrid cousin from the F150. It would be an ideal engine for a camper van.

IME RV heat pumps are not worth much below around 10C. They’re okay to take some chill out of the air in temperate weather. The propane/diesel furnace is a much better option for heating below 10C.
