Personally, I'd prefer to see reasoned responses to sho's comments, rather than sniping remarks ("elitist cack"), and downvoting into oblivion. I tend to agree with sho, and alternative, reasoned viewpoints would be enlightening.

Doesn't serve as counter argument for web chat providing strong value proposition, just that Freenode leveraged existing open source software to provide an alternative solution that they could directly manage. http://blog.freenode.net/2009

You need something better, though. After all, it should be noted that discussion here is via a web based interface, and yet the conversation isn't that bad. I agree, but IRC is different and arguably antiquated technology. It doesn't requ

I wouldn't say shouldn't , but I would say that a slightly higher barrier to entry serves as a good first-pass filter for technically-oriented communities.

As someone who has been placed in the position of semi-regularly banning mibbit from freenode OSS project channels due to abusive users, I can't see how this is a bad thing. The quality of user was exceptionally low, and "easy webchat" simp

More likely: the ridiculously steep, unsustainable price competition drives most smaller players out of the market, remaining companies take advantage of reduced competition to raise prices back to a relatively sustainable level.

Be happy with my $5.99 because you could have much less with this attitude. Your $5.99 isn't enough to support developing anything but a cheap , top-50 hit of an application. Thanks to remarkably steep price competition and remarkably po

It's an indication of the motivational factor of the promise of money. Every gold rush "success story" sends N more enterprising individuals chasing after the big payout. I've met our payroll for months on iPhone contract work and licensing

Apple, Inc. , not its individual developers, treats iPhone developers horribly. As a rule, Apple shields itself with layer upon layer of corporate bureaucratic armor, and the value of WWDC is cutting through that nonsense. However, at the

Buy a Mac? Just kidding. Mostly. If you browse to http://help.benm.at/ from your iPhone (UA checking), you can download a carrier profile that will enable tethering. Reboot your phone and you should be good to go. I recommend downloadin

If everyone actually knew how little they know, they wouldn't be cocky. There's nothing wrong with being self-assured in what you do know, and honest about what you don't, but cockiness does seems to be a good indicator of an individual's

Working with Apple via the iTunes store is an absolute nightmare. Why on earth, as a developer, would I want to give Apple all the cards on the desktop, too?

If you compare granularity of tracking and utility of historical version control across different projects of that era, such as FreeBSD vs. Linux, I think you'll find that Linus' position is clearly false.

What do you use to produce dpkgs? In addition to the cumbersome standard tools, I'm only aware of jpkg ( http://code.google.com/p/jpkg-library/ ) for Java. I've found the dpkg method to be very effective. You can sign the packages, mirror t

It's also an interesting example of where an Option/Maybe monad would save you. Coupled with a type system, the issue would even be caught at compile time (or edit-time, in the case of a type-aware editor/IDE).

Coding Horror didn't jump the shark, it is the shark. Atwood has been dispensing profoundly bad development advice for years, leveraging interesting (but pointless) anecdote and provocative opinions to drive traffic and interest.

Off the top of my head: - You generally own the license to the installed software in perpetuity. Your application source art will always be readable. - It will integrate better with your desktop user experience. Printing, drag-and-drop, cop
