An overflowing warchest is probably one of the most dangerous enablers of complacency. Screw ups and missed targets get glossed over as "There's money to cover it." Eventually, it becomes business as usual.

Basically they got it cheap, put a half ass hardware effort behind it, and now are cutting their losses. I wonder if that's how it went over in the board meeting?

I really wish this wasn't considered ground breaking. The same has been spoken of CEO compensation vesting rather than guaranteed compensation packages. The idea of separating measured performance from compensation is a joke.

I met him in NYC at the Union Square Barnes and Noble when he was promoting his book. He has a more whimsical tone to his charisma than Sagan. Sagan's was more reflective and focused. Both passionate about science and Cosmology. I think Sag

Having used Thrift and PB I find myself partial to Avro because it's very similar to what I worked with in the past. Key points about Avro: Schema is separate from data. Network bandwidth is expensive, there is no reason to transfer the sc

It seemed to be a common thread among the founders that the unencumbered sharing of discoveries was a greater good. Patents serve as roadblocks creating a temporary dead end in the process of discovery. It's better to share and have everyon

And that doesn't even get into the problem of the DST dates changing at the whim of legislation like it did recently in the US about 5 years ago. If you are attempting to track timezone instead of UTC you've now have to check date ranges wh

It's a failure in interface design and there's no reason to innovate the interface because it strikes at the core of their revenue stream which is all about hyper connectedness when the real value is in the type of the relationships. It rem

I still prefer binary IDL over json/bson/xml. Keep the schema off the wire and out of storage. People tend to not get as crazy when they stick to lists.

Ironically, the cohesion has little to do with technical knowhow or marketing. Microsoft effectively lost a decade due to their anti-competitive practices and maneuvering in the late 90s. They were maneuvering to unify the desktop/Internet

One thing to always consider is that even when the housing market makes money there are ways to benefit from it without owning a house. For instance, buy an index with a low maintenance fee that tracks the REIT. It's also a lot quicker (and
