+1 on doing a first aid course. It's a day or two, it's interesting, and it's a good thing that human beings should be prepared and willing to help one another. I'm 41 and I've now twice encountered a situation wher

I'm an Anglican (Episcopalian) deacon – your question is perhaps slightly problematic, in that "religion" is extremely difficult to define. Westerners (confessional Christians or not) tend to have in mind something that looks

We had a few ex-mining company workstations at the computer club at university – I remember that the metal security bar through the Indigo workstation could be pulled out and waved at one's fellow users, usually in good fun. :) They we

This reminds me of the letter that Charles Darwin wrote from Albany, Western Australia, when he briefly visited in 1836: "We staid (sic) there eight days and I do not remember since leaving England having passed a more dull, uninterest

I live in Perth – you don't have to go that far (maybe a hundred km) to get a good sky, but I rarely do. I was out at New Norcia recently, and it happened to be a very clear night. I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing – the

Circa 1999 one of the popular machines in my uni's computer club was the BeBox - it had a solid web browser, it was fast, it had the cool CPU usage indicator on the front, and it was *nix enough to compile most stuff or to work on assi

Thanks for this tool. One piece of feedback – it's not great that the `test_id` is a small sequentially generated integer; it's trivial to iterate across all of the URLs that have been tested.

I've found ocrmypdf to be excellent: the only issue I've had is with PDFs with differing page sizes; it seems to scale everything up to the size of the largest page, which can be a bit of a pain.

If this becomes available in Australia, it would be a decent reason for me to upgrade my phone. I quite like bushwalking, and I quite like the idea of more adventurous walks – and knowing I can text for help would be a real plus.

I've always been interested in history, and the History 5 podcasts from UC Berkeley really took my interest to the next level. There are a number of versions; the original platform is long gone, but luckily archive.org has it. A few fa

Acer laptops were super common back then at universities, at least here in Australia. I think they'd hit a sweet spot - they were affordable enough for students, and would probably not fall apart over the course of a three or four year

Yeah, this – it's easy to forget that infrastructure code (Linux, libc, openssl, ...) really is the tip of the iceberg. Industrial codebases are often at least an order of magnitude bigger; really, that shouldn't surprise us: ther

It's quite a few years ago now, but the thing I remember was pain in the moment, and then very sore muscles in my hand and arm, presumably because the muscles were convulsed by the shock. I was sore for a couple of days and then I was
