As welcome as this news may be from technical and common sense standpoints, I'm not sure if it's a good thing from a legal one. This whole affair seems to me (and I may be wrong) like one judge deciding that the law is bad, and thus that th

Because Apple and Microsoft aren't using their revenues to kill thousands of people. If cutting off their revenues diminishes their ability to do that, it'd be irresponsible of us not to worry about it, or at least consider it

No, it doesn't, but the quality of the "opposite" is rarely a relevant indicator – if you tried to recruit people into the pro-choice movement, you'd have a far harder time if you called it the "anti-life" movement.

Who will implement a DCPU16 in Conway's game of life? Seriously though, the fact that we're able to ask questions like this is a breath of fresh air... as a market, Notch has done a hell of a job appealing to us.

This is incredibly funny, but does anyone know why the interpreter makes such bizarre decisions? Why wouldn't it be preferable to just throw up errors?

This is what all the naysayers say startups should be doing: solving the real problems of the world. Well, Instagram's done it – not by focusing on the homeless, not by building a specialized tool, but by creating a platform that people c

The are a couple of possible reasons I see: 1. Hackers, and the kind people who really care about this kind of thing want to have the best; if someone says it isn't the best, even implicitly by saying that they prefer a competitor, we get d

I'd argue that this discussion isn't at all branding - it's about something more fundamental — user expectations, privacy actual fact. We're not arguing that Facebook is bad because it's Facebook . If Apple and Facebook switched places tom

I have couple of questions I hope someone on HN can answer: One, what exactly is Stratfor? The wikipedia article was far from enlightening. And, two, what did they do to get on Anonymous's bad side? Is this SOPA related?

I agree with some other commenters here that the correct response here is not to blame Apple. Yes, it's fashionable to attack them these days, but it honestly isn't their fault. The rules of the game fundamentally change when you add softwa

That's possible, but I think that the more likely scenario is the opposite - WebOS apps on Android. With a competent Webkit environment on the phone and Enyo open sourced, it seems possible, simple even.

There's no question of feeling sorry for Apple: a the largest Tech company in the world brought to it's knees by "iTether"? Not likely. But, it's really easy to feel no sympathy for the iTether guys. NO ONE was surprised they'd take it d

I'm totally against the idea to begin with, but wouldn't it just be easier to seize the domains and have them redirect to the "proper" site? Why get the search engines involved at all? On a related note, does it become in the social/search/

I think the second part of your comment hits the nail on the head: labs might actually be safer because of that lack of total commitment to a single idea. This lets them seek out value in areas that might be too risky, or with product/mar

I loved Arrested Development, and I'm glad that it's coming back, but I'm not sure this is a good move for Netflix. If this idea picks up steam, Netflix becomes a competitor to the networks and their relationships get worse. Heaven knows t

I'm actually interested in how this is done. Is there a systematic method for it, or does one pick an arbitrary string? I've always used (and been forced to renumber) ordinals, so this seems quite useful.
