I think Ruby may still have a few under-recognized advantages for small teams :-)

"Market average" is generally based on salary surveys, which kind of have to trim the extremes. So it's the median (ish), which is often lower than the mean.

More than one. There was a British AI company they bought on condition of hiring an AI ethicist. So there's at least one other than the former Google ethicist who wrote this article.

Lifestyle business idea: wear somebody's printed-out paper face at a place it can be recorded (public photos to Flickr feed, etc) as a service. A customer who uses services of this kind can "prove" they're anywhere in th

In an ops-type capacity, I support developers. I keep up with news like this specifically to avoid winding up with modules somebody else trusts, but didn't inspect.

I'm hoping there's an easy way to turn this off for the foreseeable future, to avoid all the obvious security holes this is likely to introduce.

There have been a number of dodgy ethical things in YC companies. I don't know of Sama & co returning their stake in any companies as a result.

An interesting question. They're licensing highly dodgy insurance agents who can still misinform, break the law and cost people money. That's not as bad as selling full-on fake insurance, though.

It is outrageous if a similarly-qualified woman would have a lot more trouble getting the $500k investment banker job. In that case, society is getting lower-quality investment bankers despite spending $500k/year on them.

Companies know we want it, and have gotten better at talking the talk (e.g. technical career tracks.) But look into how that actually works. For most people it's much harder, if it happens at all. I speak as a guy at the end of the tec

Are you certain everybody on your side of the negotiation is fully truthful? Do you include management, HR and recruiters in "everybody"? If so, you're not talking to your recruiters. You should find out more about what your

There are a couple of us here in the weird position of being senior enough that companies don't recruit for us through normal recruiters. On the one hand, that screws up the usual "don't give a number" advice, including

Senior DevOps roles pay bank . Easily on a par with the same seniority of software engineer. This makes sense. You have to be as good as the same quality of software engineer, do work that is less glamorous, and carry a pager.

It's possible to work for a startup and have a base salary starting with a two. And even to be hired into the role at that level. I speak from experience. But yeah, that's the very high end.

You're in a hard spot. I know, because I'm in basically the same one. Jobs in the $2X0 range are basically outside the range where a company will trust the normal recruiter/interview process to bring in a good candidate. You

A lot of the current prototypes use head position and have a little (usually circular) status-bar-type thing that fills in. You quickly learn that if you look at a thing and you don't want it to activate, turn your head a bit before th

Did they finally get templates shoehorned into it? That's been the giant, glaring flaw in all the previous ABI attempts I've seen. Well, that and getting multiple compilers to use the same name-mangling standards.

I learned C++ around 1990. It was a hack then, too. It began life as a weird preprocessor for C, and some of the seams from that beginning have shown the entire time.
