I know McClure somewhat personally, and while Arrington's speculation was fun, and I'm sure many investors are trying to counteract YC's strength, I think he is an upstanding guy, and one of the most honest, cut to the shit people in the va

I've encountered a few documents that were 1 page application forms for community resources, and all were shocked when those were suddenly behind a rather expensive paywall. I also was really annoyed the first time I noticed some obscure d

Not every application needs a back button. Virtual interfaces allow the interface to tailor to the need of the application, instead of the other way around. I agree sometimes a back button seems like it would help, but after using iOS prod

Did I miss how Python fits in here? Seems to be a rather large cognitive gap between the premise and the supporting argument. The commentary about the "true entrepreneur" has some interesting insights, although it seems a bit religious. W

If Apple tested a version of the iPhone that had four buttons on the front, it probably would have tested better because one button was unfamiliar to users and would have seemed inadequate. The point here is that sometimes good design requ

That is pretty much standard in dynamic languages, including Ruby and Python. It's what I miss most about strongly typed languages, like Java and Scala.

Yehuda really did an amazing job with Rails 3.0, both in improving the architecture and explaining the decision made. I don't know much about SproutCore yet, but I'm definitely going to take a closer look now. I also don't know much about

I think it's a great idea. Makes Google docs much easier to access from other applications. It could really help in the corporate world where a company wants to migrate to Google Docs and legacy services need to be supported or to reduce

I'm glad that some people assert rights that are a pain to assert most of the time, because it reminds everyone that they exist. However, this guy seem like kind of a jerk as well. It sounds like they largely treated him respectfully, and

I think the point is that just because there is an dominant player in an industry, doesn't mean they will remain dominant. How easy it is to disrupt a market varies, but they all will change over time. Facebook's open graph actually makes

I'm an AWS user, and I also use Rackspace some, so interesting to find this article indicating you're better off with a small Rackspace instance than a medium AWS instance. http://www.thebitsource.com/featured-posts/rackspace-cloud-s...

No doubt, the Rails community has issues, although on the whole, it seems to me larger, more dynamic, and open. I saw the django issues as coming from the fact that it was tightly held for a specific purpose for a specific company for a lo

Personally, this is where I come to find out what people obsessed with tech and start-ups are thinking about. I find most of the articles that are not directly related (that I click on anyway,) have some abstract tie-in to startup-land. Th

A related issue that I don't see addressed in the comments is the trade off between salary, opportunity cost, and equity. If there are two founders, one who could earn $150k, and the other who could earn $50k, should the former always get

Meant to up vote but downvoted. Boy does hn suck on apple devices. Hostile to developer reasoning like this is why most devs I know stick to iPhone. Yeah, apple ain't perfect, but at least their reasons make some sense.

Anyone have an idea how big this market is? Seems like the market for unused gift cards for which the owner cares enough to transfer the credit, and cares about waiting a few days, would be pretty small.

Interesting to see the present backlash against agile and TDD. As an independent developer, I can pick and choose what works. I can say honestly they are both really useful concepts filled with great tools, but I am not an expert on either

Otherinbox is on this track. They can create calendar entries automatically from emails. I stopped using them because I didn't like the opt-out style of filtering, but the technology is cool.
