> "Career experts generally favor scalable professions." Says who? In my experience, "career experts" want to make sure their advisees get a decent job. If 90% of people who follow your advice fail at their career, I'm betting you don

Although I'm not in the Valley, I think something like this would be helpful. It seems to me that pitch quality is related to how much exposure you've had to investors & customers. I think you can add value there, regardless of how mu

I hope something good comes out of this effort. But from my previous experience with biological data & biological research, I'm a bit skeptical. There is so much competition for grants & publications that researchers are sometimes

One of the interesting things that graph shows is the IE market share on weekends vs weekdays. It is noticeably lower on weekends, but only by ~5 percentage points. People often argue that corporations that require employees to use IE are

HN user fsav and I have created a site to connect hackers interesting in working on small projects together -- http://clusterify.com . Check out some of the projects posted, and let us know what you think of the site.

Well, if you assume all 12,500 people are of the same ability as the one person (perhaps it is sufficient for their abilities to be randomly drawn from the same population distribution, but I'm not sure of this), then you're taking independ

This is a serious issue to consider, but one way we're not going to solve it is by trying to restrict data collection, or simply trying to hide our own digital footprints. The latest facebook ToS episode tells us as much. To continue Sc

Good points. Theoretically, you're right, but I don't think it works that way practically. I'm not saying that my time is valueless. I'm just saying that while I value it, there is no efficient way for anyone to compensate me for 6 min

I'm always suspicious of analyses like that. Most people's earnings aren't that granular. If I make $X/hour, I don't automatically get $X/10 if you save me 6 minutes in the kitchen. Even if I do bill by the hour, it's practically impossi

"I guess my point is that Hacker News is being gamed the way reddit and digg are." Only if you think the "game" is to accumulate karma. For me, the submissions are merely seeds around which insightful discussions grow.

This is great! I wish more people did analyses like these. One nitpick: intuitively, I'm not comfortable with the idea that a 20% chance for each nominated movie is a reasonable prior. There is a ranking of the 5 nominations implied by th

While this seems like shady tactics from Mahalo, it also seems to suggest the need for a better (read: less game-able) ranking system than PageRank. There's now tons more data about which sites users visit for a given query, whether they r
