This is far more pervasive that just minimum payments. Behavioral economics research has shown the power of defaults -- make a group or policy opt-out instead of opt-in and you'll get a lot more people to join it, even though the two situa

I think that's great in principle, but I'd be wary of the communication overhead if you can't meet in person. Especially if this is something that you'd be spending only 5-10 hours per week on, it might be easier to just build a barebones

I hadn't heard of either of those sites. To be honest, I didn't know of an efficient way to give <$10 to non-profits without half of it going to overhead costs. This makes it super easy for me to give small amounts, with the added soci

I applied to MIT for undergrad, and I was thoroughly impressed by the openness of their admissions office. They are miles ahead of most schools I know of in terms of how reachable, responsive & transparent their admissions officers are

Much more than personal information, what facebook can monetize is identity & relationships. For example, with Facebook Connect, it's much harder to be an anonymous troll commenter on a blog. And maybe using Facebook Connect as a login

Yeah, the new site makes it easier to navigate, and emphasizes the top stories much more (which seems to be the goal of most news sites). (btw, clear your cookies if you want to get out of the beta -- it's "sticky" in that once you visit th

Facebook is trying to solve it. It's easy to create a new email account. It's much harder (though not impossibly so) to create a fake identity with 150 friends.

Matt, that's one of the first "advice" pieces I've read that acknowledges that all people don't (and shouldn't) make the same decision in the same circumstances. Helping people weigh the tradeoffs is MUCH better advice than "yes"/"no". I w

TicketStumbler, like any other marketplace, definitely relies on network effects. And, Google arguably doesn't rely heavily on network effects. Google's value to me (in the short run) is unaffected by how many other people use it.
