Completely agreed. These kinds of comparisons are always a joke. Rails has always been about programmer efficiency, not execution efficiency since day one.

the code was convoluted but correct. A lot of people got it wrong. The code was still shit, but correct shit.

This is a fair point, but it brings to mind another point I didn't really understand till the last couple of years. Learning about how compilers work is just as important. Building a small lisp compiler was a life-changing experience for me

Thank god the SWAT teams didn't actually kill anyone. 11 years is about right given his age. If he were older I'd ask for more, sending an armed crew of trained killers into someone's house is extremely serious.

Agreed, but remember, syscall overhead is syscall overhead, cached in ram or not.

That's a fair point, for many scenarios this stuff doesn't matter, like a video-game. However, most apps fall into either the "serialize a bunch of crap to disk" category, or the "multi-user data changes all the time category". Nearly every

Well, here's some good reasons, your OS doesn't want you to store tons of small pieces of data in many different files. If you're storing a 100 byte record in a file you're doing it wrong because: 1. Your FS has a minimum blocksize, often s

Possibly, however the better you are the faster you work the higher your value per hour. If I can be 3x as efficient as a junior dev I'm still worth more.

Wow, what an egregious straw-man argument. The article sets forth its goal, to prove that violence aside the nazis weren't efficient, then proves that point. You're complaining that the article proves a point it explicitly didn't set out to

What's so hard about typing 'env' in front of the line? `env EDITOR=vim crontab -e` Also, why are you changing your EDITOR on a one-off basis, that shit should be permanent.

The subshell syntax is there, it just looks different. Instead of: echo `mycmd`. It's echo (mycmd).

It's an interesting genre, the time-lapse while pan in HD with hyperbolic music. But I'm just burned out on them. Something about these videos just seems overwhelmingly self important and cheesy.

Agreed, I've hit the front page a number of times. There's nothing about HN that even a cheap VPS running jekyll (like I have) can't handle.

Cool article. Though it only talks about ancient Ethernet variants. Issues like packet collision don't happen on most networks because we use switches instead of vampire taps and hubs. Can someone more knowledgeable explain the parts that a

Communication is about consensus. You can contend that you're right all day long, but so long as you put others off you'll be wrong.

No, you've got it all wrong! Geeks aren't socially awkward, they're socially "efficient" Social conventions aren't established by protocol drafts, they're organic. Also, people write long replies for a reason. Wording indicates emotional

Wow, thus may be the worst language comparison I've ever read. It spends half the time covering the module import system, then blasts through the rest of the language features so fast it seems that no real thought is given. Also, a lot of t

Ummm, still not a backup. What if there's an error in the code? What if an admin runs a script directly on the server and resets all repos by mistake? What if a bad release of git comes out and corrupts the master? What if a hacker comes in

Well ring is the clojure equivalent of ruby's rack, nearly every clojure webapp uses it, and slf4j is an extremely common logging facade in java, also unsurprising. Diatomic is a weird choice though, I'd have gone with sqlite and korma

I found a bug in eventmachine during the time I spent writing em-zeromq, the eventmachine binding for zeromq. The important thing to understand here is that ZMQ is, in-essence, a userland socket. Normal sockets are efficiently monitored usi

Fact of a matter w/ anything outsourced is that you can outsource responsibility, but you can't outsource accountability. Ultimately RG's devs are responsible for their choice to leave all the admin work up to heroku.

Funny thing about unicorn is, forking is core to its design. It may handle threading now, but when I last looked at its code fork() and traditional IPC via signals were core to its operation. Puma looks like the more thread-oriented choice
