My main complaint about the project changes we've seen lately is that these companies are happy to take all the code that previous contributors have written for free in good faith, and profit off of it without any sharing. The whole re

I tried that recently and it didn't seem to work with my particular setup (Sway window manager). Or at least, the tray app won't open any windows to see if it's enabled/disabled/configured properly.

My experience lately has been similar. Most things work well now. But, I think the article has some valid points about how long it's taken to get even this far. And it just kinda sucks that some things are still broken or don't ha

As a certified graybeard (just literally graying on my beard now) who now prefers the CLI, I am SO GLAD that tools like this exist. I owe probably all of my high job satisfaction and higher income to the fact that I got to play around wit

Yeah, this is a much clearer source and the abstract gets pretty directly to the point. The first paragraph tells you pretty much everything you need to know before you read more. The Ars article took 4 paragraphs to mention "client is

The problem was always the platform. For me, I saw very early on that kubernetes was exactly what I wanted after reading about how Google "treats the datacenter like one large computer." And I've been very happily running m

Apple does a decent job off challenging Intel with just a few laptops. I suppose it depends on your definition of laptop vs specs. Kinda hard to find out what they mean in TFA with the paywall.

I'd be pretty thrilled if I could run Lightroom on Linux. Photoshop is great too but Lightroom is my main app for my biggest hobby and I've had to buy myself a whole MacBookPro just to do it without dual booting Windows, which rea

Just musing along with you here but I think it's really hard for anything like that to happen. What seems at least halfway likely is that Valve won't be the same post-Gabe. But there will be other companies that end up with a simi

Objectively, I'm not sure we can reliably say any longer, given how much pressure has been put on formerly objective reporting agencies to conform to this administration's narrative.

Yeah, I'm absolutely not saying it was the only path. It's just the path that happened. If not MS maybe it would have been Unix and something else. Either way most everyone today uses UX based on Xerox Parc's which was genero

My first comment is simply pointing out that there's always a #1 in anything you can rank. Windows happened to be what won. And I learned how to use a computer on Windows. Do I use it now? No. But I learned on it as did most people who

I think it would be pretty hard to argue against that point of view, at least thus far. If DOS/Windows hadn't become the dominant OS someone would have, and a whole generation of engineers cut their teeth on their parents' wi

That's kind of how open source works, though. Of course the backend vendors won't care about anything that doesn't affect the backend somehow. But the people, i.e. users, who do want to be able to easily switch away from bad

I'd just like to point out that you've said OTel has fundamental problems, and then you pointed out a couple examples of one-time-fixable transient problems. These are issues you'd experience with anything that spans your sta

This argument doesn't work with such commoditized software. It's more like comparing an oil change for $100 plus an hour of research and a short drive against a convenient oil change right next door for $2,500.

That's really just added work, IMO, and likely room for security misconfiguration between backend and proxy. You should still be validating and everything on the application server to inspect identity and possibly attributes like roles

Yeah, to clarify, I had to first set up /hub as a caching proxy using the UI. Then the above configuration change was what I needed on my nodes in order to transparently use the proxy without changing podspecs.
