Over the years I think I've done all of these. They're all a little painful. Being in Australia means that latency is an issue, I'm sure fast DSL in California is different. If you're using SSH, an editor and terminal that supports GPM mous

gzip and zlib HTTP encodings (different containers for "deflate" compression) include a checksum of the uncompressed content (a CRC-32 variant and Adler-32 respectively). If compression isn't wanted, you can wrap uncompressed bytes with a d

Fonts and interface chrome always seem to take up a tiny bit more space on OS X. Not usually an issue but I'd take it into account if, on Windows, a given res is barely usable. I have a 13-inch air; the pixels are tiny . If you try 1440x

I've seen it done for years in a reasonably sized team. It actually works really well in a fulltime scenario on a large project, on decent desktop boxes in an office environment. Developers appreciated that significant config changes boiled

I mainly use iTerm2 because, unlike Terminal.app, it has gpm support. Being able to use a mouse while editing files over an SSH connection, without having to think about it, is a big win.

Many developers need to read and understand this. I note that the question was migrated from StackOverflow to security.stackexchange.com. After all, this is an issue that the security nerds care about. Why bother ordinary developers with

Just a hunch - I bet a lot of the printers from the 80s (eg the TRS-80 one) speak plain ASCII over a standard parallel port, with CHR(10), CHR(11) and CHR(13) for line feed, page feed and carriage return. (Although I'm guessing, so check be

"Passive aggressive" hits the nail on the head. If someone truly believes you should break software that made bad assumptions about memcpy, as a matter of engineering principle, then just stick this at the top of memcpy and be done with it:
