I agree. From the article: > Flurry drew up the estimate based on new handsets appearing in its data over the launch period allowing it to give quite an accurate prediction. Given that they have nothing to validate their numbers against

Yes, purely out of curiousity I'd be interested in what's happening behind the scenes. Is memory being leaked? Is garbage collection (assuming it's used) not good enough? Is it a deliberate design choice for HN?

This all seems laughably silly. Someone writes a blog post about statistics; there's lots of commentary about the author's grasp of statistics; someone points out two errors in the statistics; but now in actual fact they weren't errors, the

I'm no great fan of unions in general but teaching unions do provide important advice, support and representation to teachers. There have been enough cases of teachers being wrongly sacked over false claims by children of abuse etc. that I

A small slightly pedantic point, but that should be 'a Senior Marketing Manager' rather than 'the Senior Marketing Manager'. The Senior Marketing Manager is, I imagine, a very important person. A Senior Marketing Manager is, well, a manager

Is that really true? I'm not a part of the 'startup community' but looking at a few of the startups that have achieved some success (Google, Reddit, Balsamiq, Dropbox) it doesn't really seem like they were a result of personal challenges fa

From the 'Story' page on the site: 'The filmmaker at the table reminded the others of the story told in the classic film It’s A Wonderful Life — a tale about a small banker, played by Jimmy Stewart, who almost gets crushed by a big banker.

I think I'd argue that this _is_ analogous to academia (well at least to mathematics). Take Fermat's Last Theorem for example, it's commonly accepted that Andrew Wiles proved the Theorem. However, without the work and results of thousands o

Oh I see, my apologies, I thought that the first sentence was the summary, and the second two were your thoughts on it.

Your last two sentences are a bit vague. When are the "old days"? 30 or 40 years ago, or pre 2007/8 financial crisis? Automated trading is risky; but then all trading is risky. Do you mean as opposed to another type of trading?

Actually, I was thinking about DOB as being just the day and month, not day, month and year. If the year's included then this seems less far fetched, although I'd still be surprised if it's correct.

It's a little off topic, but I'm intrigued by the '87% of Americans can be uniquely identified by DOB, gender and zip code'. Given the size of the US's population and the relative scarcity of zip codes, this seems an incredible claim. The l

I'm always amazed by news stories about people being prosecuted for possession of child pornography, found when they took their laptop in for servicing/fixing. So in light of that someone taking a stolen bike for servicing doesn't seem that

Unfortunately that's not practical, it's third party software and at least the last time we checked there wasn't a better alternative with the same functionality.

At least on Windows they are both multi-threaded. If you look in Task Manager then firefox.exe will have multiple threads (32 on my machine) and each chrome.exe process will have multiple threads (anywhere between 3 and 21 on the 15 tabs I

One of the big pains of my work day is our accounting system which, while being great at what it does well, can be abysmally slow to respond to queries (the simple question of how much of X do we own now, takes it around three minutes to an

I can't reply to your comment to this. Pretty much everything I do at work involves communicating with resources which may block/crash so it wouldn't really be practical to put everything in a single while loop. It sounds a little bit to me

OK, but surely there are cases where it would be useful (I would argue necessary) to have a single process with multiple threads - when dealing with GUIs for example.

I appreciate that nothing happens at the same time on a single core but CPU time is shared between threads so it 'appears' as if more than one thing happens at once. A good example of this is a web browser on a single core machine - the bro

I think you're being downvoted because people disagree with what you're saying. In my experience you need multiple threads when you want multiple things to happen at the same time. i.e. if I have a client/server architecture and one client

I guess the interest in and plausibility of the rumor will govern how much it is discussed. If the rumor being true will affect people (say iPhone developers) then it seems natural that people would want to discuss the likelihood of the rum

It's not always possible to quantify what $50k of work is though. In the original post jquery states that his work made the company $1m. What does that figure mean though? How much of that $1m does the infrastructure team deserve credit for
