I'm baffled by all the 'do a startup' advice. Your complaints seem to be: - you feel you're working too hard and too long - you don't have a work/life balance, hence the girlfriend problem - you want to lead the good life - you are peeved t

I don't see what's so unfair about effectively a first-come first-served system, or to put it another way, how a fairer system could work. Perhaps more to the point, exchanges compete for business, if the rules used in an exchange aren't wh

The 'news' events they're reacting to are financial events at the level of price changes, order book depths etc. They don't react to things like the president being shot, and I'd imagine that if that did happen then at least some of those t

I suppose maybe the counter-argument to that is that the technological advancements that come about as a result of finance pushing for them, propagate out to the wider world and can help speed up the rate of discoveries as new technologies

What does your disclaimer mean? Ramanujan was a tremendously talented mathematician. Just because you come from the same country as him or find his religious beliefs archaic and/or irrational doesn't mean you can just dismiss his achievemen

But the final (i.e. fifth) set is never reached in the solution. At Wimbledon it is entriely correct that you can win the match in three or four sets by winning the third or fourth set in a tie-break. There is not a problem with the solutio

If you need to send a 'pen and paper' document or form to someone and you don't have a scanner or a photocopying machine which can make digital copies, then faxing is an option.

As a non-American this is interesting to me (and possibly others) for a couple of reasons: * American politics has a large bearing on my life. America's decisions about finance, foreign policy, fuel, war etc. affect us all. So it's nice to

I think 'customer' is a somewhat fair term. The fact that I use the free version of X makes it more likely that at some point I might buy the non-free version of X if I've built up a level of trust with the company, and/or that I'll recomme

I'd agree with your dislike of ugly solutions. I guess the benefit of this being accepted as a proof is that all the conjectures that begin 'Assuming that x is true...' can now be converted to theorems saying 'x is true, therefore...', whic

Looking at streets in London that are not included I wondered whether they're not included for security reasons. Maybe there are government buildings on Princes Street that the authorities don't want "them" to have pictures of..

That's not really correct, if they'd lost 100% productivity instead then each person wouldn't have been (75 - 0) / 3 = 25% less productive. Dividing like that's not valid.
