I'd say the best frameworks and tools in general appear as a byproduct of a bigger project. It's quite hard to start with a mindset of "I want to build a framework that does everything."

So the people that built Rails, Django, Lift, various ORM libraries, and optimized libraries, such as Boost, all did it wrong? Hell, I hope everyone is that wrong at least once in their lives. Edit: I also question the necessity or even the

The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany have a lot of English-speaking workplaces. A lot of web jobs in London. New Zealand has an interesting albeit small startup scene.

I kinda cringe when mobile reimplementations of desktop ideas, such as AdMob, are compared to Tesla.

Yes, it's the MapReduce of C#. Easy to use, powerful, and extendable - the same syntax can be used no matter if the data is in-memory data structure, XML or SQL. Libraries exist to parallelize and distribute LINQ queries.

IMHO the ColdFusion requirement is more likely to get you a failed enterprise guy instead of a hacker that actually enjoys the work.

I've been coding for quite a few years, but it was Godel's Proof that got me into the theoretical parts of computer science (even though it's a logic book). Strongly recommended. Godel, Escher, and Bach is the usual book to read after Godel

Not really news. Many real open source influencers get hired by companies to work on their ideas 100% of the time.

From the FAQ: Do you really believe that we are in a computer simulation? No. I believe that the simulation argument is sound.

If you are looking for a language that will expand your programming horizon try Scala (closer to C/C++), Lisp or Scheme (both very different from C/C++).

IMHO The selection is rather poor. 4 of the 10 speeches are regarding a simple technical product. While they might be cool, touchscreens and Wii remote hacks are not going to change the world, while many other talks do just that. Only 3 or

You could achieve the same effect by mailing a confirmation number via snail-mail. This would not fix one of the fraud problems - the hijacking of valid accounts in good standing. It would only affect fraudsters psychologically, as the poli

The difficult rating thing is really really clever! I wish Google had that. Only problem is that I usually ski near home (in Europe) and the convention over there is colors (green, blue, red and black) instead of shapes. Still, kudos for th

I tried Bach and it appears that it just returned Wikipedia articles that mentioned Bach. My initial expectations were more along the lines of Google Sets. What are the shapes on the homepage for? It was kind of intriguing that they seemed

Last time I checked Nokia N95's were outselling the iPhone considerably, even as there is hardly any advertising in the US (1), none of the carriers sell it and the price is significantly higher. And that's just one model. (*) A non-geek fr

Nokia's S60 is a good alternative. A very mature, yet completely open OS. Touchscreen phones coming, too. It would take years for Apple to catch up with Nokia's attention to detail. Too bad they are practically non-existent in the US...
