I spent a week in S.F. in March 2007 and another in May 2008. I spent most of the time in the same areas (Market St., SoMa, Yerba Buena and Fisherman's Wharf) the increase in the number of homeless people in 2008 was staggering.

Liar's poker. Ask 2 people to pick a number and the one that picks the lower doesn't get paid. The number of people that actually play the game is the result of the experiment.

How exactly do you batch writes? Do you save 2 blobs in 1 file? Or some kind of keep-alive that Amazon counts as a single request?

1800 people attended Le Web 08. If SwissCom charged E100,000 total, that makes 55 euro per person to provide 2 days of Internet connectivity! That costs more than 2 months of residential DSL per person. Ridiculous, even if it had worked.

Even worse, they are going the way of a company built around a feature. Kiko users would have had to consciously move to Google Calendar. With PDF viewing most people won't even notice if what they are using changed. (I'm not ranting agains

You could even find better plugins at jQuery.org. The top plugin in this list is a contact form that slides. Holy bat shit!

andr's Law of Lists of Great Stuff: The greatness of the items in a list is inversely proportional to the size of the list. For further proof, see "Top 100 XYZ Apps" lists in ReadWriteWeb.

Cool. An unrelated minor idea: *Note: Please clear your browser cache in order to see the changes* To avoid having to ask your users to refresh just append a version number (either manual or your SVN revision number) to all JS and CS

Yeah, I'm curious about the details, such as the mutation function and the phenotype. Otherwise it's a pretty straightforward GA.

I would have bought a subscription for this right away, as we were discussing rolling something like that on our own for a client. However, your pricing page being a "mailto" link put me off. Tell the price right away. Also, what are "advan

Open another instance in a second window and you'll quickly see the answer. Only one car would best fit the constraints (that's by definition). However, it's probably not the car you are seeing, because the algorithm tends to get stuck on l

Why not do for memory controllers the same thing we are doing for cores? If 8 cores is the practical limit of a single memory controller, why not ship 16-core CPUs with 2 independent controllers, one for each set of eight cores? True, the t

From memory: the Excel bug that caused Moody's to give high ratings of mortgage securities (one of the probable causes of the whole mess) was known, but management decided not to fix it. So, greed can override checks and balances.

+1. My Dell fan was full of dust, so the notebook started overheating. I asked Dell (over their online chat) if it can be replaced and two days later a technician knocked on my door and took care of it. Total time wasted: 10 minutes. PS I d
