As do the states. Commercial trucks pay a lot more road use tax than passenger cars. Whether it's proportional to the damage they cause I don't know.

CR is $7.95 a month. Sign up for a month when you're making a major purchase. If it saves even 10 minutes of research time, that's value enough for me.

Well? What's wrong with Consumer Reports? Sign up, pay for it, done. Why does valuable information that takes a lot of time and expense to produce need to be free? That attitude is the root of most of what's wrong with the web tod

Almost all criminal convictions are public record, unless sealed for a specific reason (youthful offender, perhaps). Please cite an example of a teacher convicted of child abuse where that conviction was "hidden from the public."

The police are almost never around to intervene in a crime in progress. They show up in the aftermath and investigate what happened, gather evidence, and eventually may refer a suspect to the prosecutor for charges.

You don't need to remove the microcontroller. You can reflash it using a utility, and the researchers showed that IBM was not resetting the BMC firmware between clients on that bare-metal server.

Not an expert but I would not think you would suffer much muscle loss in a short (less than 1 week) fast. It takes longer than that for your metabolism to transition into starvation mode. Maybe there's some risk if your body fat is alr

There is no diet. You stop eating. Drink only water (some people allow for coffee/tea but I think if you're being strict about it that should be avoided also).

Stay busy, distract yourself with interesting things. I have done 3-4 days water fast a few times out of curiosity. In my case, the hunger cravings diminshed after 48 hours or so. However, I've never feel better, worse, or different fr

I don't think the main reason for banning cars from city centers was to reduce noise and improve air quality, it was to reduce congestion. Noise and air quality improvements were a nice side benefit.

It's not a problem the government can fix, that much should be clear by now. Trillions of dollars have been spent on fighting poverty. It hasn't worked.

Anecdotally I see the cops talking to white youth in "gangbanger" dress quite often. I'm not sure the lesson is anything other than "if you don't want to be treated like a criminal, don't dress like a stereotyp

I really should learn that. I often find myself maniupulating text data in emacs, turning it into CSV or something that I can then copy/paste into a spreadsheet for calculations.

No, for the stated purpose (an "instant on" portable remote terminal with long battery life), a Chromebook is far superior to a cheap windows laptop. The Chromebook will go from out of the box to fully configured in about 5 minute

I have the opposite point of view. Far from being irrelevant, our planet and our life here is the only thing that is relevant. Galaxies we will never visit, cosmological phenomena totally beyond our control... none of it matters at all to o

Yeah but you can get a still-good small gasoline-powered car for a small fraction of that, and it will have 3-4 times the range of the Leaf and refuel time of 5 minutes at the nearest gas pump.
