Also, perhaps crucially depending what you own and whether you're willing to change it, OpenBSD does not support Nvidia cards. So if you want a desktop with GPU acceleration, you'll need to be using Intel or AMD graphics.

2008 was more a consequence of lowering lending qualification standards (or just ignoring them altogether) than it was low rates. Doesn't matter so much what the interest rate is, if you are lending money to people who can't pay i

In the 1980s, for FORTRAN, coding your program on punch cards was still not that uncommon.

There was a lot of 2-digit year coded in the early 1990s. I wrote some of it myself. The reason was compatibility with older code/data formats, and also as mentioned the notion that "this will all be gone before 2000" or that

I think GP is saying, if you are at a point in development where you can choose A or B, and A has foreseeable better performance or scalability, all else being equal choose A. A lot of assumptions there and real world is almost never that c

Maybe, maybe not. Did they have investors? The code is an asset. Can they sell the code/IP for any significant amount of money? If so, they should do that and pay back the investors/reduce their losses. Maybe there are no buyers,

HN is about as far from representative of the "typical user" as you can get. No reason you should think that the opinion of people here means much with regards to any specific project or idea.

A few (but not many) people would be against aborting a nonviable fetus. Fortunately these cases are rare, and IMO medically necessary abortion should not be conflated with "abortion on demand" in policy/laws. I'm sorry

US automakers have pretty much switched over to metric fasteners for years. My 15-year-old Ford is all metric. They sell their cars all over the world.

I've seen this here at least once before, but agree that an appearance on HN should not be used to imply a YC endorsement.

First generations of browser-based UI did refresh/reload the page a lot. But there was nothing else they could do, really. AJAX wasn't a thing, DOM manipulation wasn't possible. Older UIs written in Visual Basic, Delphi, Powe

I haven't done any formal experiments but it sure feels like autocorrect hurts newly as much as it helps. I'm constantly having to stop and retire words that it gets wiring.

No, I can definitely hit Alt-Q to close a window, or Ctrl-k to delete a line of text in emacs, before I even finish reaching for the mouse. I'll buy that some tasks maybe faster with a mouse, but not everything.

As a writer, one writes for one's audience. It's a US publication, targeting mainly US readers. Using metric units would be less understandable. It's not like the reason high speed rail doesn't work in the US is because

I would have guessed that any large wind turbine would have to have variable pitch blades. You need to be able to feather the blades in case of high wind/overspeed, maintenance, or other need to stop/slow the rotational speed.

I agree in theory. In practice I would see this working like any other class action. Most of the money will go into the pockets of lawyers, with very little left to remedy the actual damages.

Yes it totally avoids the problem, because the hypothetical authority is made up of people, thus granted (some of) the legal rights of persons.

Corporations, and the government for that matter, are made up of people. Lakes, rivers, and forests are not. So there is that difference. The article itself is an editorial piece with scant details. Who is sued? One example is given of a la
