They're not doing that. No city is doing that. Your way of thinking leads to punishing people for being poor.

Very true, but that's a frontend problem, not a rails problem.

Idk, that feels like an accounting trick to me. Sure, it's technically profitable now, but only because they get to reap the benefit of a network effect without paying for it. I agree with you though, profitability is an impossible goa

The shinkansen is not equivalent to business class travel. Flights between Tokyo and Osaka cost roughly half of a shinkansen ticket, but that doesn't include transport to and from the airport. It also takes way more time to fly, includ

But wait, that means there 8 unemployed people without money to spend on our business... Oh I know! Get the government to give everyone money! Just not so much money that they can compete with us!

What's your point? What are you even arguing here? You started at questioning if wealth inequality lead to the current situation, and now you abandoned that point and moved on to claiming SF is unique (it's not), and going off on

There's no leap, but we don't even need to have that conversation. Poverty exists, which leads to homelessness. This is not because of "local SF and California" policies. Homelessness is a problem in nearly every North A

I'm sure you can see how after your first justification fell through, you just came up with another one that supports your point of view. This is called post hoc reasoning, or, in tech, decision-based data-making.

Rent control regulation is great for tenants, which means it's great for keeping people housed. If that means being a landlord isn't lucrative enough, that's fine, the government can absorb that capacity and build social hous

You're right that it's nothing inherent to tech, it's about the money coming in and displacing the existing communities. It just so happens that that money came from tech. People are talking as if this is the city's prob

The "market" doesn't dictate that. Policy has kept housing expensive in SF by not building enough supply, by not regulating rents, but not building better public transit infrastructure. And it's the rich advocating again

Are city officials handing out money to them? Because that's what was claimed. Not that there are people asking for money.

In well run cities and countries this doesn't happen in the first place. Stop criminalizing poverty and try actually solving the problem.
