What about inconsistencies with data outside the database? Things like credit card transactions or other external API calls that were recorded on the master but not the slave will be inconsistent with your slaves view of the world. Is the

It seems like you'd be IO bound when scanning the array so using larger than machine precision integers shouldn't slow things down. Particularly since you know the number of bits you'll need beforehand.

Apple is an interesting company but not all Apple news is interesting. Articles about the three points you mention have a lot of potential, but this is not related to any of them except Apple being big, which is somewhat interesting on its

Selling every iPad 2 they could make is interesting, but I didn't know that after reading this. I asked because I didn't know why Apple's quarterly earnings are a big deal, not because I didn't think they could be.

What makes this interesting? They did well this quarter and they are going to do ok next quarter. Intel's earnings report yesterday was much more surprising, but still not particularly notable to anyone who isn't following Intel.

I must have misunderstood your first comment because I agree completely. I don't have any data about it, but I would think that any large tech company would be much more interested in having the best people than they would be in hiring onl

Why should you hire for diversity instead of just trying to hire the best? Isn't the goal to eliminate racial and ethnic discrimination rather than change its focus?

Why do you think things wouldn't end up just as bad here if we suddenly had hundreds of millions of extremely poor people living here?

That looks interesting, but at least for the near future solutions like that aren't good for things you want other people to run without having to do a lot of work. That said, I'll definitely look into using that as I learn Clojure.

There's definitely some subjectivity and it comes down to what you want from a language and framework. I think Haskell is the best way to learn functional programming because it's pure, has a powerful type system and helpful community, and

One things WebOS excels at is multitasking. Cards and stacks in WebOS are a great way to have multiple items open. I used to have an iPad and sometimes I'd use it for web browsing since it has a much larger screen but I'd always miss how

Just because it's not required to do the job doesn't mean a curious sysadmin shouldn't know the difference. The difference between symmetric and asymmetric encryption is a pretty basic part of cryptography and if you read about cryptograph

I meant deployments of software without an operating system other than Xen. Running an operating system on Xen means that you now have the Xen kernel and guest kernel that can have bugs.

Have you heard of any major deployments of software directly on top of Xen? I know that HaLVM ( http://halvm.org/wiki/ ) supports doing that but I haven't heard of any production uses for it. Some things, like stateless web servers, seem

If you really only need this for a couple of days it might be a good idea to rent, but if you'd like some real hardware you can get 24 cores and 64GB of RAM for less than $3000. If you need to test regularly it might be worth it just to bu

Having the government decided which technologies can be used might have had some benefits here but it seems like there would be a lot less work on making technologies better and a lot more work on lobbying if that were the case.

Is this significant? I haven't used Node but the changelog makes it looks like there's nothing particularly interesting about this release.
