What are people actually using these days for analytics? What is missing? (i.e. what would the dream startup do for you?) There's a lot of hype around certain technologies, and I suspect it does not reflect reality. I've used hado

Would you be able to tell apart a pizza from a top italian restaurant and a microwaved instant pizza? The differences between top-grade sushi and bad sushi are just as obvious, you really don't need to be an expert. By the way, in japa

Wow, that mission statement is so ambitious it made me cringe. Reality check: hardware startups are struggling to ship very simple products after obtaining >$1m funding. Choosing just one product for color/material customization is

That's engineering, not physics. There is a lot of chemistry research that goes into battery technology, but AFAIK Tesla's batteries use tried-and-proven lithium ion tech. Also, he dropped out of his Ph.D. on the first week. So it

That's a pretty lame rationalization. My mom was a victim of some adware and she had no idea. She thought she was seeing google ads or something and only asked me for help because a bunch of stuff stopped working. Just because somethin

Cython already compiles to C and is relatively mature. In my opinion these hacks will always be specialty tools. What the world really needs is more languages that are both expressive and run pretty fast. e.g. Julia.

Cool hack, but an on/off switch is quite limited in this context. There's a startup (sensibo.com) that's building a full HW/SW solution for controlling and monitoring IR-operated air conditioners. (full disclosure: I

Sorry for being blunt, but this is an MBA-style slideshow with a lot of talk about abstract phases and very little substance. I feel that even for hardware entrepreneurs starting out in the same space this lecture has close to zero takeaway

With all the international travel and global trade of this day and age, it amazes me how difficult it is to get a decent espresso in the US, even in major cities. Beer OTOH has been completely revolutionised in recent years.

The bigger picture is that CPython's core team simply does not care too much about performance. Performance has never been a fundamental requirement, but merely an afterthought. The biggest reminder of this was Python 3, which for me w
