No, AdGuard desktop is basically a full-scale firewall with a network driver that intercepts all network connections. Regarding Android, this works with the help of the VPN API. 1. Android routes all IP packets to the “tun” interface 2. AdG

Let me please chime in. As AdGuard developer, I'd like to comment on what you said and explain some details about how it works. First of all, AdGuard desktop and mobile apps are quite different from hosts files or pi-hole. For instance

There is another interesting paper on a similar topic that proves that this approach is vulnerable to different adversarial attacks, for instance, you can make it block legitimate content, or you can conceal ads by adding an overlay invisib

Acceptable ads deserves being there, you are right. This was the first attempt at finding a compromise with advertisers, hated by a huge part of users and advertisers at the same time. But it was launched by Adblock Plus in 2011, long befor

1. The only debugging tool we have is the browser console, and the only thing printed there is the blocked URL, you cannot even find out what rule did that. 2. The maximum number of rules IS a problem and it is there only because the curren

Shadow DOM is created dynamically using "attachShadow". You can try overriding Element.prototype.attachShadow, but this is easy to detect.

Actually, Web Components and Shadow DOM bother me more than Web Assembly. You cannot "pierce" into a shadow DOM from the outside and this creates an impenetrable barrier for content blockers. We've already seen examples of wh

Not directly related to the topic but anyway, can anyone explain how come Apple rule (every browser has to use WebKit under the hood) was never openly disputed? I am pretty sure Mozilla, Google, and others would love to bring their engines.

Well, let me disagree. The documentation is lagging. Right after the WWDC there were nothing except for some header files. Also, why half a year? Do you think it will take them that much to release 10.15.4?

As usually, Apple does not give developers any time to react. There is no migration plan save for one video from WWDC where they briefly describe some alternatives. > In macOS 10.15.4, use of deprecated KPIs triggers a notification to th

Nowadays, a small team is simply not enough to develop a browser and keep up with the competition. Unless you fork Chrome, of course.

This might be a sign for other employees that they need to focus on the things that can help Mozilla actually earn more and not just be a good guy. It may sound horrible, but considering their market share dynamics it makes sense.

This would be true unless the stores you are talking about were not imposing countless limitations. Microsoft store is for UWP apps only, Mac AppStore is for sandboxed apps only, and I’d better not even start with Play store and iOS AppStor

This “shoot first ask questions later” approach is typical not just for Google, but for AV vendors as well. The problem is that in the case of Google the potential consequences for a legit developer are much scarier: all browsers are affect

The thing is I am not sure if Igor was developing Nginx on his own time. IANAL as well, but I am not sure if it counts if part of the work was done from his Rambler workplace.

Igor Sysoev developed Nginx while working in Rambler (a Russian search engine) back in 2002-2004. Now, 15 years later, Rambler filed a copyright claim against Nginx and Igor, and demands (allegedly) 51M RUB from them.
