A lot of languages have had type declarations at the end. The first popular which comes to mind is Pascal (see http://wiki.freepascal.org/Fibonacci_number ). You get used to it. Having to deal with this kind of differences b

Most companies require a CLA. A CLA is not automatically equivalent to handing over copyright to the contribution. In some cases, the company is asking for a license to use+distribute the code (which IMHO should be implied by open a PR in t

On x86, some instructions are longer than others. Incrementing is a single byte. Setting the value 1 if you don’t assume anything is going to be 2 bytes (al, ah, bl, etc.) or 4 bytes for (ax, bx, etc.) This online x86/x64 assembler is

If it’s easy to inspect the packages, then you just recursively fix everywhere. It’s better than having static libraries that you cannot fix without recompiling from source.

Call me crazy, but it would be nice if binaries were bundled with all their dependencies but then the OS maps identical files to the same memory region to save space+perf. You get the best of both worlds?

Yes and no. You end up with a weaker api, eg you can’t perform atomic updates across shards. But you can create data atomically, perhaps build atomic counters, etc. Giving up some flexibility in the types of atomic operations you can do for

I have witnessed first hand companies who decide to do cross-shard transactions when in fact they don’t really need it. For example, imagine that you have a distributed key-value store. You want to users (on different shards) to either both

This. Very few language designers understand the usefulness of being able to parse the code while it is incomplete/being typed out. You end up with “hacks” to color your code vs a real parser to compile the code.

Great list. The only thing I would add is make sure you have a Windows box. Some tools work on Linux/Mac, but in general, Windows will have easier to use/setup tools. A fun FPGA project which doesn’t require too much skills/k

Some HSMs allow you to run custom code (usually a co-processor within the HSM’s security boundary but distinct from where the keys are loaded / raw crypto primitives happen). Other HSMs don’t have this ability. Finally some vendors wil

The main motivation to build vs use an existing solution was a solid backup/DR story and the desire to be able to write custom business logic which is enforced inside the HSM. It’s things like controlling where funds can go, or requiri
