The author waits until the very last paragraph before acknowledging: "Gender differences can sometimes be symptoms of oppression and subordination." And that's true. Oppression, subordination, etc exist. And so do innate diff

I had a similar take, especially since we all know that terms of service are written very broadly. But on the other hand, I would really hate to mess up my Coursera account. After posting my initial comment, I saw further down that HN user

As a former employee, do you have any insight into how Coursera views tools like this? As I wrote in a different comment, this appears to violate their TOS.

This violates Coursera's terms of service. The relevant language: "...as a condition of accessing the Sites, you agree not to...(c) use any high-volume, automated or electronic means to access the Sites (including without limitati

I agree, but I don't think this obviates the need for regular citizens' videotaping the police. If surveillance is going to be omnipresent, I think it's crucial that regular people are able to present their viewpoints as well

FWIW, every hip college town I have been to had multiple coffee shops that were better than Starbucks. You don't have to live in a large metropolis.

"you never hear anyone advocating for GM." My perception is just the opposite: it seems like the advocacy is overwhelmingly in favor of GM. EDIT: For example, here in America, we can't even get laws passed requiring the label

As many others have pointed out, "engaged in combat" has the potential to be interpreted in dangerous ways. I think the drone issue is distracting people from what I feel is the more important issue: Our government has taken the official po

I appreciate the sentiment, but I don't think you're reading the parent's post very charitably. They aren't saying, "things used to be a certain way, therefore it's OK." The way I read it, they're suggesting that, if the behavior really kil

I think you're making a good point. A lot of people reserve the word "mindfulness" for the sort of meditations you're describing here and use "meditation" for something more specific. But they're just names and I don't worry about them too

I don't see how the post proves that at all. They're making an assertion about matters of fact, not a value judgement. Many of us Americans express the desire for the end of the American Empire, yet the world's hegemon America remains.

I was surprised not to find a discussion of correlation vs causation here. If you accept the correlation, I think there are different plausible ways to interpret it. It could be that the way we interact with the computer is a symptom of our

Doesn't the fact that companies like Path are exploiting people's address book information illustrate that we do need such strict guidelines? So Apple didn't make enough rules. That doesn't mean that the existing rules were ineffective. I
