I can agree with parts of it, but I still think Google should pay Oracle for licensing Java. They copied the entire API so they could leverage the entire Java ecosystem, I think that's quite unfair to Oracle. Oracle is not suing microsoft

First I thought this is one of the signs of a bubble, like when taxi drivers are talking about how the latest tech IPO will make them rich. But in this case, he seems to have a serious interest in programming.

Why didn't they? They could have avoided being sued, this again goes to Oracle favor for this lawsuit, they wanted Java's advantages as a virtual machine implementation and not bare metal programming like C/C++.

I can see that argument if you consider the API design to be a significant intellectual contribution which Oracle can prove considering the popularity of Java and it's ecosystem.

Oracle will say it's the same book, there are always grey areas. You can't copyright a love story between a boy and a girl, but you can copyright a particular book on it. So if the API is copyrightable, then even though it was implemented

Google's slide said that the API is just using nouns and verbs. I think this is not a good defense, the book I wrote is just nouns and verbs, and we know you can't copy it.

If we take the law as it is, i think Oracle should win. This is very interesting because it covers the copyright on the API and not software patents. I think this is a legitimate and winning case for Oracle. What were Sun/Oracle's condit

It is not a scornful sentiment, it is the same appreciation that you are referring to. Just like computing 2+2 is not the same as theoretical mathematics and creativity in mathematics, finding a game that is not computer reducible is an as

I always wanted more dynamic commenting which some of the fisheye/github tools already do. For instance being able to have a discussion about a line of code. Not necessarily a code review, but more like explaining the code with pro/con di

The fact that computers have such a hard time is a reason it is worth playing and makes Go attractive. The fact that chess can be reduced just makes chess unappealing.

There was a post a few months ago about a startup that needed to redo their entire application in open source because their biz spark ran out. Anyone remember that? Maybe it's a good deal now, but it better be a good deal a couple years f

Software networking is clearly the future. It is probably long term, but complex hardware switches which do not use commodity processors and commodity software languages will definitely fall by the wayside, even if they are as big and bad a

This company uses infrared technology to patch potholes, instead of traditional asphalt. They are selling franchises. The owner of a company I used to work for bought the franchise for MD-DC-VA and is doing well with it. http://www.bpoth

Found this by a tweet by Buddy Roemer. I think this is absolutely correct. The USA is all about lobbying and money. I think it's why parents from India complain that "why can't our kids just wear a damn uniform like we did" The role of

I have always been curious about OrientDB, but from what I saw it was very small and not backed by any commercial entity and it's usage was not widespread. Also Luca, you should in fairness write that you are the maintainer.

Isn't a large problem with ISP's the last mile, fiber or cable, which is very expensive? This is purely wireless? I have a 15Mb cable connection for $50 month (after taxes). FIOS is $30 more. Will he partner with these physical carriers

An amazing idea to disrupt this industry. I can see the same thing for medical and vision. Lasik for 25% of the cost sounds nice (but messing with your eyes is a big risk). What are other players in this market?

I didn't get that till you mentioned it. Article talks about deploying to a cloud, but no details. I think the packaging of apt is great, but I don't understand how the cloud deployment fits in.

The opening of classes seems to cause people problems. A lot of Ruby's popularity is from it's killer app, Rails. But trying to program python after Ruby for me is difficult, python feels so constrained.

How about value adds and referrals? Seems your company has no google juice. I did a few google searches and didn't find your because the term 'web hosting' is so SEM'ed to death. In order to compensate you could offer referral bonuses.
