Definitely first-order functions made LISP powerful compared to its contemporaries-- but also you can't mention abstraction without mentioning macros. Macros are first-class metaprogramming, and very much enabled by the uniformity of s

To me, the specialness of LISPs comes from the uniformity of the syntax (which in turn makes code easier to understand and reason about). This is probably highly subjective! That said, SICP is unreasonably excellent :)

iTunes U was totally cool in 2007, and remained cool into the early 2010s with some improvements. My just wish it had remained cool until today! To be honest, I think iTunes U was negative incentive for universities to put content online,

Not surprising, given how iTunes U never found a critical mass and quite frankly stagnated. It's a shame, since education tech is very bad and could really use a wake-up call. I thought Apple entering the space might increase competiti

Sadly, in my experience at least, most commercial software projects also suffer from the "treehouse door doesn't close" problem. I think far too many "professional" developers give up after good enough.

Thank you for sharing this detailed rundown. One of the challenges that I faced as a new Clojure developer was understanding how all the parts fit together (and in fact, what parts I should care about in the first place). Example: is learni

You know, I reflected on this, and if you add up the whole food supply chain, people driving to grocery stores, overproduction, refrigeration, etc. then wasted food starts to look like a bigger problem than I initially give it credit for.

Gonna need a source on this before I believe it. I'm skeptical food waste plays a major role in GHG emissions. Last I checked, burning fossil fuels and making plastic accounted for the vast majority of harmful emissions.
