I know the term is somewhat vague in it's meaning these days but I don't think many people would consider "show the most common queries with this prefix" to be AI. Besides, it's the content not the mechanism being presented here, I guess it

So you think it provides some insight into something or other? Not just a cheap laugh? It seems to me to be quite a long way from "anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity".

Is anyone else a little disturbed that this has 121 points and is at the top of the HN frontpage? Maybe I'm just being grumpy but it seems like total fluff that's of no use to anyone. I'm surprised it hasn't been killed, are there no mods a

That's really missing the beauty of the book form. Cross reference and non-linear reading is made easy by those "see also" sections on every right hand page. They're present in the PDF but they don't work so well on an on-screen version.

It's both the source code and a book. This single source file can be compiled to both the book (weave->tex->dvi2ps) or too Tex itself (tangle->pascal compiler). It's kind of a beautiful idea I think. I would strongly recommend g

Oh yes, that still looks like line noise and I still think it's about the worst possible first example I can imagine.

Sample code! Sample code! Why do language web sites so frequently omit samples of the language? It should be right there on the intro page, just to give me a feeling for the language.

Just be confidant in yourself and it shouldn't be a problem. So what if someone wants to imply that you're stupid for asking a question? Ask anyway, then you'll be learning while those who dare not ask are left behind. I guess what I'm tryi

Having read the tutorial it (the dining philosophers problem example) now looks quite elegant. I'm still a little unsure about exactly what latches do and when you're meant to use the -> operator though. A quick syntax summary would rea

The first example given is a perl-golf style obfuscated thingy. Does that strike anyone else as possibly the absolute worst thing you could possible do when showing someone a language for the first time and wanting to make a good impression

There is usually at least one comment putting forward this idea for every story about Apple or Google and I wouldn't say it's particularly controversial. "we" are a collection of people, many of us with differing ideas on many subjects.

Why wouldn't you just make the it an abstract base model without any fields? If that's not what you want though you should be able to get that behavior using multiple inheritance: class AlwaysUpdate(object): def save(self, *args

This code will cause problems with some parts of Django. I forget where, but I have encountered problems writing code like this before because sometimes the save method gets called by things which expect it to take its optional parameters.

But only in the cases where it actually matters which given normal DB usage patterns for most sites is often nowhere. No point in making things more complicated when it's not needed!

If you think about it there are things you can do with a not too large an amount of liquid chemicals that would cause serious problems on plane. I don't think making explosives is one of them.

That's not quite fair though, the problem as he states it is to do this after you've written the program. So while yes, you could use the State Monad that might not be a trivial change to the code. Things might be even worse if the functi

Very much so. One of the cool things about markdown is it looks good in source form as well as after processing to HTML. In order to keep that looking good you of course keep your lines to under 80 characters. That makes sense in fixed widt

There are all sorts of reasons a site could go down and 30 minutes is a tiny amount of time. It's just a site full of articles, it's not like he's losing money for every second it's down! Come back tomorrow and I'm sure it'll all be there f
