He took (possibly messy, although that doesn't have much to do with it) JavaScript code which he didn't own and had no rights to without asking and made changes to it. No PHP here.

This was not open source code. Would you expect to be allowed to download the GMail JavaScript code and use it to make your own webmail software? Hacker culture is great, but that doesn't mean you can or should force everyone in the world t

The original code was not open source. It just happened to be JavaScript so it was possible to steal it. Just for anyone who doesn't know: when no explicit license or copyright information is given this means all rights are with the author.

Wow, what a dick this Marak guys seems to be. He steals someone's code (possibly laboring under a mistaken idea of how copyright law works) makes snarky comments about the original and then when he's called on it instead of just admitting h

As others have pointed out iOS does have virtual memory. As to why it doesn't use a swap file probably the a reason is that flash memory has a limited number of read-write cycles, probably way more than you could ever use under normal usage

Who cares? It's enough to make me think it's less about homophobia and more about Apple's prudishness. And that's enough for me not to give a crap.

Before we all get into a rage, is there any real evidence that they objected to semi-nude homosexual kissing and not just to semi-nude kissing in general? That would still be kind of silly but it loses some of the rage-inducing homophobia

Maybe PG would agree to put some text to the effect that "by posting this comment you give permission for it also to appear in Hacker Monthly unless you opt-out" on the comments page. I can't imagine many people having a problem with that b

HN won't let me reply to your answer below (presumably to stop me from flaming you :p). But thanks, I'll read that blog post later but it looks like it answers my questions plus a bit more. Seems my understanding was even less than I though

I must be have been wrong then, my apologies. How are you using to arrive at that conclusion though? When I do a A/B testing I (or rather, the software I use) use the chi-squared test to give a confidence value expressed as a percentage. Wh

As far as I understand it in the US each state has different sales taxes so the norm is to quote without tax. For the UK at least it's all the same VAT (17.5%) so the norm (for consumers at least) is to quote with taxes.

Are there any web developers here who didn't know these things? Are there any developers of any type who didn't? I'm not sure who the audience for this article is meant to be but I'm guessing you won't find too many of them here.

No, you were making a point but you phrased it as a question, which is annoying. That added together with the inanity of said point (my opinion, but probably one I share with others) caused one person (not me) to mod you down.
