This is assuming that performance is an issue, which I would guess is not the case for at least 90% of uses. For most cases I'd say ease of use and cross platform makes select "better" than epoll.

It's unclear what exactly they're doing apart from putting an iPad shaped border round an iframe. This doesn't in any way let you "test your website on an iPad". It let's you "test your website in the exact browser you are using right now b

Oh yes, Iron Sunrise was cool. Love Ian M Banks too, The Culture is incredible as a vision of a far future utopia. I've not read any Vernor Vinge but will check it out, recommend any starting points?

Glass House is one. Read Accelerando first though, Glass House is set in the same universe but a bit later on, plus that book is awesome :) Anyone got any other recommendations? I've really enjoyed his scifi but not so hot on demons (they w

That sounds pretty awesome. I've got an idea for something kind of similar which I might try, but yours would probably be way better so please do it :)

Right, so probably nothing to do with outsourcing or this article. I believe the normal advice is to go get some of your work out there, contribute to open source projects or something. Make yourself more attractive to employers (or maybe e

But until we figure out a way to ban being a prick I'll take the blanket phone ban. And what is this urgent call about anyway? Maybe to you it seems urgent and to me it just seems like you're being inconsiderate.

In all fairness, this doesn't have more than most superficial relationship to the ideas in Fahrenheit 451 (which is an awesome book).

No one should get a Job! Instead everyone should make money by running blogs where they tell each other not to get a Job! It's genius!

£1/1000 is still more expensive then if they could be done with human input. And they need to be done for every time a captcha is needed, with this scheme you could presumably pay for humans to solve the adds currently in rotation (ten? hun

So you replace the hard to read CAPTCHAs with easy to read ads. Of which presumably there will be a limited number in circulation at any one time. Sounds kinda easy to circumvent...

Ouch, I could imagine that S3 glitch causing a serious problem. Not in Colin's code I'm sure but maybe with someone a little less diligent. A 404 could cause a system to assume something isn't there and maybe, shock horror, write something

Of course there are cases where Rails isn't the right solution, that's true of absolutely everything. It's probably fine for all your uses (and for mine too) though. You are not going to get a useful discussion of them with that blog post t

Some people don't like Rails. This isn't a problem. It's not a personal insult to you or to your skills or to anyone else who likes or uses Rails. It's sometimes useful to discuss the limitations (in some subset of people's views) of softwa

You say it's so trivial yet you didn't include a link to the one you just set up to prove your point :p So not quite that trivial, and that is often enough. Quite often it is useful to be able to do something easily and quickly that you c

You may already know this, but just in case here's a solution for you, get a VPS from Linode and proxy off it. You don't need to set anything up, just use the -D flag to ssh to open up a SOCKS proxy. It's like this form OSX or Linux: ssh -D
