This reminds me of the quote that the four most expensive words in investing are "this time it's different".

You're right that the money wouldn't necessarily dry up, but attitudes towards the risk might change if the likelihood of success of these startups goes down over time. There may be a point where investors don't want to stoma

I'm with you. We've seen a demo, not a real product that people are using. I wish people would temper their expectations a bit. If product development has taught me anything, it's that it's easy to put together a demo to

I totally agree. I only started playing with Go a few months ago and remember how amateurish the website and the mascot made it look. It gave the impression that it was a work in progress and research project instead of something that'

This is interesting advice, but the real world is messy and 30 minutes to boil down everything you should know is not going to happen with most people. (And 3 minutes to talk about the biggest challenges to the team?) Have you ever tried

I don't think it's any different from watching a sporting event and screaming and shouting when the team scores a goal. Even if you're all alone, you want to show appreciation.

A PS4 1TB Slim is $320 right now. Target has it for $300. During the holidays, they and retailers sold it for $250. After the holidays, I watched slowly as the price started rising each week. Retailers jumped back up to $300, but Amazon was

Choose Your Own Adventure and text-based adventure games you type into your computer (with BASIC) really got me into computers as a kid back in the late 80s/early 90s. I wrote my own gamebooks using a simple notepad and "turn to p

It does feel gross, even if we all implicitly do it. Some things aren't meant to be consciously commodified, I think. It's like the thought experiment of asking a friend (or your mom) how much you owe them if they make you dinner.

This, pretty much. Once you're on gmail, I doubt you leave and you're giving them free data already. There's no reason to improve the service once you're in.

I loved OS/2. Back in the '90s I ran the later OS/2 Warp version and it was pretty solid. I remember running a BBS in a window and was still able to use the OS for other things. Multitasking like that was still a novel thing

I think the answer to the mp3/h.264 question today is yes, you do have to pay party X. The payment is for the license of the spec, I believe, and not the implementation.

Yes, I wrote a few different ones for text-based BBS games I wrote in the 90s. I did it because I wanted to write a totally customizable game engine that didn't require any additional tools. Also, I don't think there were too many

I don't know if using spaced repetition works that well for "memorizing" code that you don't use normally. Coding is the kind of thing that you do where if something is done rarely, it's probably not something you n

Good point about it being a double-edged sword, but I think strategically it's better to rely on an existing service (allow use of multiple services to diversify the risk). If the services disappear, yes, you're a bit SOL but I&#x
