They look out for the shareholders of the company. Since Mark Zuckerberg owns a majority of the voting shares, the board basically runs as a formality for him. The industry plays no real role on the board.

This seemed like a likely outcome when he was stripped of his chairman role, the board needed a sacrificial lamb and he was it. Given the nytimes article yesterday the board deciding to cut ties during the week of Christmas is very telling.
