Um, a "world model" in the context of AI doesn't mean a map of the globe. It means a model of reality as humans perceive it, with all of the cultural, social, historical, etc. associations. And that is what AI plainly does no

Yeah, but even if you pay for it they'll still collect all your personal information. This is just a misdirection on their part. It's not the ads that are the problem (well, they're part of the problem), it's the privacy

In order to research something, you first need to define what it is. There are a lot of mental phenomena, some subjective and some measurable, that may or may not be components of "consciousness." "State of mind" is a ve

With help from the internet and a little effort, you can remove those popups, McAfee ads, etc. When I set up a PC for somebody, I always take care of that stuff. After you get rid of the crap, it's a fairly usable OS. And, of course, t

Bunch of blather. For one thing there are definitely babies born with ambiguous genitalia. For another thing, the author is conflating "sex" and "gender" which are two different concepts. Not only that, but among other s

Psychedelics are not necessarily a feel-good, euphoric kind of drug. They will put you more in touch with reality, both external and internal. Ultimately, that's a good thing, but that's why set and setting are so important. And i

Fabulous! Amazon now offers customers the option of paying to look at ads. (Edit -- I see that there will still be an ad-free tier, but it will cost an extra $3 a month. Doesn't affect me anyway, I'm not a Prime subscriber.)

Because it's totally normal for an author to publish 2 or 3 books a day, but 4 books is just suspicious.

I don't use smart home devices -- there aren't any features there that appeal to me. But my understanding is that it's entirely possible to set up a connected home that doesn't depend on cloud services, or on devices con

No, I don't think that follows. The current model of neurons firing, even if it can be simulated by a computer, does not explain consciousness. Whether the source of consciousness is non-physical, or whether there is some physical expl
