I was able to do freelance iPhone development. If you're already good in C++, it will give you a leg up in learning objective-c. Also, I could not agree more with the points about "working needs discipline." If you're staying in hostels,

And the "certain instances" when you can run things in the background are incredibly limited... You can finish network calls or set an alarm, for instance, but you can't actually run your app in the background. When Apple first announced m

I'm curious what their definition of "multitasking" is... To begin with, iOS doesn't really support multitasking in the general sense of the word. You can save application state when the app moves into the background and restore when the a

Well, if you wanted to be a real geek about it, given n attempts, your chances of a single success are 1 - (.95 ^ n)... but I'd also like to think that an entrepreneurial endeavor is not pure chance.

I think the argument is that, by and large, Australian football is no less violent than American football. However, helmets incentivise poor tackling technique (i.e. leading with the helmet). If you took off the facemask, the game would b

I've heard this point made on a per-individual basis. The numbers I found actually make it look even worse: California per-pupil spending 2008: $9,015 California’s Annual Costs to Incarcerate an Inmate in Prison: $47,102 http://blogs.sacb

Interesting... here's my "gut reaction" as a non-statistician. The problem is that 'A' has a probabilistic component as well. If you let X be the "lesser of the 2 dollar amounts" and let A = X/2 + 2X, then you come out with equal expected

From what I've read (which may be outdated), there was a system whereby high frequency traders could discover buyers limit prices by executing a series of small-volume "probe" trades at increasing dollar amounts. Then, once the limit is fo

Since the government already owns 60% of GM, why not simply make the car cost 35 grand and cut out the middle man? The 40k+ sticker shock will inevitably drive away buyers, even if the actual cost is lower.

I couldn't agree more... It's absolute lunacy that a student who has gone through an engineering PhD program, subsidized by US taxpayers and corporations via research grants, may not be able to stay in the US post-graduation. There should

You don't have to actually install the full xcode IDE. You can do a minimal install of XCode from the installation CD, enough to get the required dependencies, and then install gcc from macports.

Plenty of illegal immigrants have bank accounts. At least around here (Bay Area) it's kind of a joke -- there's literally a separate line for illegal immigrants to do all-cash transactions. Presumably they use a fake SSN to open the accou

Why is a -50dBm S/N ratio considered a "perfect signal"? Edit: dBm as a unit for SNR doesn't make sense, which is why I was confused. The Y axis is overall signal strength, not S/N ratio.
