You could look at it like this: the goal is to reduce the total number of sick says in the pool, however you do it. A pooled allowance might encourage people more to stay away from work when ill. A given individual may not have much control

What's so amazing about it, when compared to the other SQL DBMS's? (e.g. postgresql, oracle, sybase, db2, etc) Especially as it's just a re-badged Sybase...

I think the nested intervals model, a refinement of nested sets, solves this slow update problem: http://www.rampant-books.com/art_vadim_nested_sets_sql_trees... But I've never had to use it, so I am just guessing. Sam
